Imagine a world where the villages of humans were scattered along mountaintops, and the world below was completely blocked off by an impassible wall of clouds. In a world like that, advancements in air travel would precede both land and sea. This is the kind of world that Aero Empire is set in. In this world, the player can rise through the ranks, from a lowly gunner manning a turret aboard an airship to the commander of several airships, ordering the crew of your own airship and the captains of the airships in your squad. Aero Empire is a cross-genre game, incorporating elements of role-playing games, shooters, flight simulators, and squad combat. Production on the game started November 25th, 2008, and is scheduled to release by the end of 2010, and a potential sequel focusing on nation management may come later. The single player version will be free to download and play, with no restrictions.

Amazing design. Love the conceptual detail involved. Very Da Vinci-esque with a bit of Jules Verne mixed in. Can't wait to see this thing modeled and rigged.

Thanks :)
It's being modeled right now actually. Unfortunately it can't be very high-poly, but we'll try to squeeze in as much detail as we can.
And yes, all the little engine bits will animate.

The sacrifice for games. Thankfully it doesn't need to be high-poly to be extremely gorgeous.

good textures and bump maps will do wonders for low poly models

Yup - that's pretty much the philosophy behind AE models. Low poly models with quality textures and cell shading end up looking good and artistic.

I'm going to build one of those, even if it takes the rest of my life...

To the best of my knowledge, it works. Mechanically all the essential parts fit together and the engine will actually run.
The power to weight ratio is easily below par, so it won't fly. But it would make a nice kinetic sculpture :P.

Description

Concept art for Gyros, fighter type aircraft which launch from carrier airships. In contrast to the large and expensive airships, gyros are small and fast (around 5 meters long) and support little more than their miniaturized steam engine, the pilot and one or two weapons systems.

Gyros come in three varieties - standard glider (shown), biplane bomber, and experimental helicopter.
