Spring:1944 is a WWII themed RTS based on the open source Spring Engine. Our goal is to create four fully functional sides (US, Germany, USSR, Britain) with period-accurate units and strengths. Realism is a primary design goal, second only to creating a game that is fun and accessible to play. Why is this different from the umpteen zillion other WWII RTS games? A few reasons. First: SCALE. In an average game between two players on a medium-large map, you may see upwards of 400 infantry of various types, dozens of halftracks and armored cars, artillery batteries, light, medium and heavy tanks, aircraft and more. And - you build it all yourself. Second: Degree of control. With roots in the classic RTS "Build, expand, destroy" playstyle, YOU make the decisions on what units you think are most suited to the current (and ever-changing) situation, and build accordingly - none of this "here are your two Shermans and thirty men, have fun..." business seen in games such as Sudden Strike.

Hello all!
Well, ok, first I'll be honest. I wanted a new post to take all those stale images off our front page. Yell at me if you want.
Recent not-quite-news-but-worth-reading-anyways items:
First, the juiciest part: we're gearing up for another release, this time including heavy tanks for all sides (Tiger, Tiger II! IS-2! Churchill! Jumbo?), as well as a few aircraft (Il-2! P-51 Mustang, Spitfire! Fw-190, Bf109! among others!) on top of the set of infantry, light vehicles, towed guns, and light/medium tanks that we already have completed. Also, stay tuned for the release of M_26_7's beautiful map, Prokhorovka_1944 (check out the pictures!).
A small (perhaps) administrative point: thanks to Scott of ModDB founding fame, we've been moved over into the Indie Game category. This is because we're not actually modding any game - we started from absolute scratch with the Spring Engine. So, like other Spring engine games, we are, in fact, our own game. Pretty crazy, eh?
Also, it's worth repeating from the last post that we finally have nicer PHP-based forums, rather than the dumpy YABB base we were using. Come by and say hi!
If you're wondering where that darn release is that we posted about earlier in the year - shortly after we posted it, we discovered a nasty Spring engine bug that impacted S44 rather badly - games of 2v2 or larger in S44 tended to crash. So we removed S44 from the internets in hopes of preventing it from being known as "the crashy game." Never fear, onwards we work, and the next release is perhaps not far off. I won't be more specific than that, though (unless some curious soul decides to hire the S44 dev team to work on it full-time. Then I'd be happy to tell you when the release will be ;) ).
. We look forward to seeing you on our forums!
PS: I'm sorry for not including more pretty pictures in this post. I promise I'll put some more in the next one...

Love the Kat Rockets, although they're missing the rails. Still awesome look to them! Also, the planes sound more like jets than prop planes.
Don't mean to nitpick lol, just my personality I guess. Awesome progress! Can't wait to check this out when its done!
This looks increadible.
"Finally, we want a WWII RTS game where we can play against other people online, with epic engagements of hundreds of infantry and dozens of tanks and artillery units. That's what Spring:1944 is."
What? I've been doing that for a year now. (Company of Heroes)
Company of Heroes allows for player control of literally -hundreds- of infantry at a time? News to me. CoH is a much more squad focused game - that is, the player controls a much smaller number of units with a much higher degree of player intervention. Of course we can't match that level of polish (we're just a few guys doing this as a hobby), but we think there is a new area of gameplay to be fulfilled, unique among WWII RTS games - a truly epic scaled game.
That is exactly what I was thinking.
And this is Spring. Last time I looked, you didn't have to pay to play this. UNLIKE Company of Heroes.
Please don't compare commercial games with hobby, independent game development. It's not fair.
It really is bad to compare a Indie game to a Market Game. People who make Indie games are breaking there backs to bring players a fun game for little or no cost to players.Marketing only are in it for the money.
savage 2 is a indie game and its not free. other then that, this mod looks the most greatist ww2 mod so far agreed.
