With the largest fanbase of any game ever released and well over 50 awards to it's name, Half-Life by Valve Software is undoubtably one of the greatest games ever. Half-Life's great assets though is it's modding potential and as shown by brilliant titles such as Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, there is no question as to why more mods exist for Half-Life than any other game. If you havn't given this game a whirl and one of it's many mods you are definitely missing out!

Basic Mapping/Technical.

[page=Introduction]
Okay. I will now teach you how to use the clipping tool, to clip doorways, windows, rocks, roofs etc.
The Clipping tool is vital for your map to work - just make sure you dont make any leaks in your map - this is the biggest 0 using the clipping tool. In this tutorial, you will be shown how to make a doorway. One of the great advantages of the Clipping tool, is that it doesn't create as many w_polys's as e.g. Carve or Hollow.
Lets get cracking, then :)

[page=Making the Brushes]
In this step, you will make the brushes (Floor and walls). When you're done, proceed to the next page.

I used following textures:

Floor = CRETE4_FLR03

Wall = C1A3WALL03

ROOF = OUT_ROOF1

Okay. Select a place on the wall where you like the doorway to be. Choose the clipping tool

Before you select the clipping tool, Select the wall itself. Then select the clipping tool. Now, choose a place on the wall, where you want the door to be and Drag Down.
Your wall should now look like this:

Okay. Look at the 2D-views. One part of the Brush is red, the other is NOT.
The part that is red, is the part that will be removed. As we don't want any of the brushes removed, press the clipping tool button untill your 2D-view looks somewhat like this:

Now, you can click enter to finish the clip.
As it is a doorway, we need an upper panel of the wall, don't we ? Of course we do. Don't deselect the parts, do the same as before now. Choose a with of the door (Standard door is 64 Units. Wide. A player is 32, and needs 33 to pass [CS])
I chose the 64 Units - Do the same thing again, just 64 units further :)
Your doorway should now look like this:

Because it's a door, it'd look totally fucked-fecking-shite if you didn't make an upper part of the wall.
Now you are going to clip vertically. A Door is standardly 96 Units tall, i followed that measurement:

Okay. Click on another brush, someplace else. You have now deselected the pieces you have ready clipped. Click on the piece in the middle. it should start to glow red - as all other pieces that are selected. Make sure you have picked the right piece, and click DELETE.

[page=Conclusion]
See ? That wasn't so hard :)
Doing windows is the excact same thing. Just clip it once, so that you have a square instead of a door-ish shape.

-Good luck mapping :)

I am pretty sure that my map has LEAKS in it because no matter what I do, it will not run. It opens up in Hammer, but not in the real game. What is a leak? how do i find em? are they just props inside of other props? bad map construction? it worked before, but now It doesnt and thats what is confusing me.

kahote ne kape
