0 A.D. (pronounced "zero ey-dee") is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. It's a historically-based war/economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of twelve ancient civilizations, each depicted at their peak of economic growth and military prowess.

The twelve factions are: Three of the Hellenic States (Athens, Sparta and Macedonia), two of the kingdoms of Alexander the Great's successors (Seleucids and Ptolemaic Egyptians), two Celtic tribes (Britons and Gauls), the Republican Romans, the Achaemenid Persians, the Iberians, the Carthaginians, and the Mauryan Indians. Each civilization is complete with substantially unique artwork, technologies and civilization bonuses.

Developed using Pyrogenesis, a game engine custom-built to suit our needs, 0 A.D. will give players a rich and entertaining real-time gaming experience. 0 A.D. is portable, running not only on Windows, like most games, but also on Linux and Mac OS X.

We believe free, OS software like 0 A.D. encourages sharing, learning and creativity. That's why we have made the code and data available under the GPL license, and released the art, sound and documentation under CC-BY-SA. Modifying the game's data files is as simple as editing JavaScript and XML files, so anyone can learn how the game was developed and share their own contribution to the 0 A.D. world.

0 A.D. is being developed by Wildfire Games, a community of volunteer, hobbyist game developers from all over the world. 0 A.D. has been an open source project since July 2009. We're looking for programmers, 3d artists and more.

Let's go back to the motherland and look to what happened prior to the discovery of what now is Hvanndalir.

A couple of youthly fellows is send away to prove that they have what it takes to be true Norsemen. (that temple you see on the right side is made by Stanislas69)They leave on their ship in search of adventures, riches but most of all: honour.

Back again to Hvanndalir

Our little town is growing immersively because it's in a strategic location for raids on the mainland. Therefore the island will soon grow too small. Expanding to other places however isn't possible without waging war because of the ominous presence of Carolingians. The Elders are aware of that and they're recruiting new forces in the motherland. Also new, and higher quality armours have been made (by wackyserious and Stanislas69) like you see in the 2nd image of this post.

The King has heard of the preparations and has sent some of his finest men: Huskárls (by wackyserious and Stanislas69).

P.S.: The first two images are taken on the brand new Fjords skirmish map made by Skhorn. The images also showcase the new building textures made by niektb and Stanislas69.

Help needed!

You probably noticed that it has been a while since we posted updates (about 11 months!). That's not without reason. In the last few months a couple members retired leaving us shorthanded.
We are currently especially in the need of artists. So if you're a talented artist with a passion for history and you would like to help us out, please contact us using a PM or in this thread: Wildfiregames...showtopic=18412

Also we really want to do a release along with 0 A.D. Alpha 19 so we are in the need of some playtesters to iron out possible bugs and to enhance the gameplay. Please note that it is required to install the developer version of 0 A.D. which is a little complicated so it might not be for everyone (Trac.wildfiregames.com)

Lastly we would like to start on the Carolingian units but we do not have a design document or a unit roster yet. So if you're into French history and like to talk about how the civilization should play and look, please sign up on our forum and let us hear your opinion here: Wildfiregames.com

In my opinion, the game is actually much better than I thought it was going to be. Certain aspects of the game seem quite polished for how far in development they have gotten. But as I said in a previous comment, the game is a little unresponsive and feels a little sluggish. Aside from that and a few bugs here and there, it's really well put together. I think it will be a great game upon completion. (oh btw, I'm not a developer on the team, if that's what you were thinking)

Now that you've open sourced the project, you might consider allowing users to post media on your ModDB profile.
I've successfully compiled the game and loaded a random map and I moved some of the units around and I was satisfied for the most part. My only complaint is that the unit selection and movement responsiveness was a little slow. I was also not able to run the game in debug mode because, for some reason, I was not able to click anything in the menu. However, as soon as I ran the executable outside of Visual Studio, it worked.
