0 A.D. (pronounced "zero ey-dee") is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. It's a historically-based war/economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of twelve ancient civilizations, each depicted at their peak of economic growth and military prowess.

The twelve factions are: Three of the Hellenic States (Athens, Sparta and Macedonia), two of the kingdoms of Alexander the Great's successors (Seleucids and Ptolemaic Egyptians), two Celtic tribes (Britons and Gauls), the Republican Romans, the Achaemenid Persians, the Iberians, the Carthaginians, and the Mauryan Indians. Each civilization is complete with substantially unique artwork, technologies and civilization bonuses.

Developed using Pyrogenesis, a game engine custom-built to suit our needs, 0 A.D. will give players a rich and entertaining real-time gaming experience. 0 A.D. is portable, running not only on Windows, like most games, but also on Linux and Mac OS X.

We believe free, OS software like 0 A.D. encourages sharing, learning and creativity. That's why we have made the code and data available under the GPL license, and released the art, sound and documentation under CC-BY-SA. Modifying the game's data files is as simple as editing JavaScript and XML files, so anyone can learn how the game was developed and share their own contribution to the 0 A.D. world.

0 A.D. is being developed by Wildfire Games, a community of volunteer, hobbyist game developers from all over the world. 0 A.D. has been an open source project since July 2009. We're looking for programmers, 3d artists and more.

Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: 0 A.D. Modders host Map Design Contest

1 comment by feneur on Jul 8th, 2014

In celebration of the five year anniversary (It's really been five years?! Time flies!) of 0 A.D. going Open Source the Council of Modders (a group of 0 A.D. modders) are hosting a map making contest! The aim of the contest is to create a playable skirmish map that fits in one of the predefined themes:

  1. Northern Highlands:
In the lands where rocks and mountain rule the earth and snow and rain dominate the air, a few remnants of humanity dare to resist the supremacy of the forces of Nature.
  2. Ancient Lands:
Once there was a highly civilized kingdom, now only pain and rocks. However, rumors say that great treasures are to be found beyond the walls of this destroyed city.

For more detailed rules, and information about the possible rewards, visit the announcement in our forums.

Below are some images of a map shieldwolf23 (one of the judges in the competition) has made, and which we think shows that he's well qualified to judge the contestants' maps.

We hope that these images, and the contest themes, will inspire you, and look forward to your creations. For more information about how to use Atlas (our scenario editor/map maker) please see the Atlas (Scenario Editor) Manual in our wiki. And if you've got any questions/are curious about something not mentioned in the manual, please check by our Scenario Design/Map Making forum.

It's certainly being worked on, our latest release was about two months ago, and the next will most likely be 1-2 months from now. If it's worth playing? Well, it depends on whether or not you're ok with playing a game that's not finished. There are still some missing features, the game is not perfectly balanced, and can get laggy in some situations (you can lower the likelihood by playing on smaller maps, either multiplayer or against just one AI, using a lower population cap etc). We'll keep working on all these issues of course, so if you want a more polished/better performing game you might want to wait. It's certainly playable though, so as long as you're ok with things not being as smooth as in a finished game I suggest you download it and try it out.

Especially since it's free - you don't exactly lose anything apart from some of your time from trying it at this point. ;)

I agree, it's the most powerful open source game I've seen since blenderartist haidnu's Krum which is an RPG with few units while 0AD is capable to handle hundreds of units and even thousands of entities (trees, all kind of animals with amazing animations, see the new wolf by Micket & Strannik).

I can't wait for the next release with some of the most impressing improvements ever (making garrisoned units visible!, i.e. allow entities on other entities).

Hopefully in the next release, that depends on people working on the translation though. Currently Polish is at 53% translated, so still some work left to be done. See Transifex.com for more information and to help out.

I was playing a game yesterday with my brothers and they decided it would be funny to run around the map and build new civic centers whenever i destroyed their previous one...
In age of empires 2 there is a thing called treason/spies or something like that,it lets you see all the enemy villagers, would something like this be implemented into this game?

Yeah that was classic. You'd only get it if your opponent doesn't accept defeat and hides around the map with a handful of units. Using it during the prime of both empires, or when you're losing would cost you the game.
