It's been over 20  years after the cold war but AMERICA still want to make Russians the main villain's in movies and games. Can someone say why ? We don't make Americans evil in Russian movies we just call them idiots sometimes And the funny thing is that America conquered the bloody world but we are still the main villains !

We don't call every German a Fascist ! I don't have anything against America in-fact i like America in many ways and i want to get a propped education there but I'm really getting annoyed by this fact !

It's funny how other people from other nations have already started to notice. -_-

Examples, please!

Maybe you could make a website about Evil Russians™ in movies and video games.
Start with the James Bond movies.

The reason is that in TV/cinema someone has to play the bad guy, and since the film/show is marketed to americans primarily the point of view is from an American point of view and it makes no sense to make them also the villian. So who becomes the enemy in these plots? Pretty much anyone who sounds plauseable and those countries are usually the countries America has faced in the past as an enemy, the latest threats in history the better.

Out of those countries, there are only a few in which were powerful enough to be considered to be a great threat on the US,

It's not that American writers hate Russia or Russians, they just want to make a scenario that sounds plausible. :/ ...

Or to put it bluntly ... You can blame it on American stereotypes. Writers will play right into stereotypes to make their story sound realistic. It's quite common actually ...

Just the other day I watched the movie "extraordinary measures" which depicts a chemistry professor from UNL Nebraska finding a cure for a disease. I go to that school and their depiction of UNL's campus was horribly horribly stereotyped ... The building he worked in (named othmer hall, the building I have classes ever day) was depicted as a small building in the middle of a corn field (it's actually part of a large complex of buildings in the down town part of the city) the Nebraskan characters were all depicted as somewhat being rednecks, even the professor. However, this simply wasn't true ...

Writers will write their stories so that they fit into stereotypes ... Ironically, it somewhat perpetuates those stereotypes ...

Russia is still a patriarchal society. Putin re-created a state that is far from being a democracy and Russians often have an air of being 10 years behind the rest of the world. Your designs are horrible, your technology is laughable, your community is brutal - that's how the western world receives and views the Russian world. Russia is a role model for creating injustice - think about all the journalists that are getting killed for revealing dirty business. That doesn't happen in any democratic state. If Russia changes, there will be no need to make the Russian the bad guy, but as I see it, no matter if in Film or reality, the stereotype still prevails.

America is a different thing alltogether. Americans are so ignorant of everything else in the world (except bringing war to other countries), and so stupid that they don't understand how their system doesn't create equal chances for all, but injustice for everybody, including the rest of the world. Did you know that only 1% of the US population holds 37% of it's entire money? The rest is shared by the mainstream, who will invest it into guns (for private protection...) and cars they cannot afford. Gone the American dream... but still better than living the Russian nightmare, really.

I'd blame that on the greed and stupidity of Americans ...

The average debt in America is around $40k ... That's fucking ridiculous. You can blame it on people mistaking "The American dream" for "The Materialistic dream". (that sounds like a great book title :p )

Do not count the latest invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. They didn't happen. And if they did (did they?), they are for FREEDOM*. You must forget the word "invasion" and comply to whatever Bush or Obama tells you!

@SinKing, Europe is also pretty f_cked up. We do have the European Union creeping in, and that's a hell of dilemma to choose between the nationalist or populist nightmares of the past, or the another covert centralising organisation that can step on everybody's foot and crash the party when wishes so.

* freedom, i.e. freeing nations from their oil supplies (for example)

Would you rather be part of Russia? I know Europe is a greater idea than practice, but the times where you can just hang around and sell a handfull of turnips on the local market are over. Poland needs to think of the future too and stop entertaining its people with stories from the wonderful past. I'm not a believer in the captitalist system or of globalization, and I don't think that federal reserve banking makes any sense at all. But i don't see the Poles making any creative suggestions for a better future. And unfortunately living in the past is a privilege of the aged, not the young.

Russia is not an enemy, neither is America. It's a system that makes no sense and lives on the creation of debt alone. We are slaves to a world where work has no value and the less we know the better off we are. If you want to be successful in this world, blend out everything that isn't connected to your own egoistic life. That's what I have learned so far. And it's not a rule I want to believe in! However, ask those who are successful - if pressed they would kill for a loan. There is no thing like a conscience, no compassion among mankind anymore. And not only economically, but also ecologically we are living on credit. For every 3 $ of worth in global economy 4$ have to be invested, strange as that may sound. This extra value comes from petroleum, so once we used that up there will be no more globalization, no more maximization of profit - nothing. The question is, who is really a bad guy. If we are all blind, we're following readily, but going nowhere. The world has become a place of Fashism again. Fashists tell you what to do and what to believe is right. In this case they are sitting in the banks and in advertising agencies; creating propaganda. And if you believe in Money that's worse than believing in anything else.

Yes, that's why the Greek already fight against the very corruption, the very system, the very banking, the debts that push everybody to psychic and physical limits. And until we change on the very individual level and do something about it, this Fascism will gain the total control over us, and our children. All slaves to the elites that care only for themselves, and little (if not at all) for anybody else.

the true reason why russians are almost always the bad guys is because they are badass.

because you guys are awesome, intelligent, suave and have a cool accent =P. the perfect villian! =D Not to mention whenever people are going to think of a world conflict or whatever we're just going to look at the next world power and go from there. We aren't gonna be having world war 3 with madagascar, so yeah, if south america were to be a more successful competing world power then we'd probably have a bunch of spanish bad guys in movies. So really its more of a compliment than anything =D also a lot of the more successful mafias in America were/are probably Russian, so I'm sure that has something to do with it

You need to watch more movies/ play more games. Sometimes Americans are the badguys. Sometimes Germans, Koreans, Chinese, someone from the middle east, etc.

The original reference of angst  was to " games and movies ". Both are fictional entertainment mediums, regardless of whether the the story line was inspired by actual events or not. Regardless of the presence of current and/or historical cultural stigmatics, every society supplies fodder for the entertainment industry. No point in taking offense.

So you obviously have issues with the US...so what ? It doesn't change a thing. Mother Russia's had a long, rich, and charismatic role in forging world history and she's going to be famous forever; just not the way you'd like it apparently. No one's demonizing her, their just playing to her strong " cult of personality ". One doesn't forget such a historically impactive " Super Power ", former or not, as Russia, so quickly. I imagine you take pride in your heritage as well you should.

Maybe the real problem is you're talking about a handful of movies/games ?

It's been answered, though, it involves them being a super power and all the conflict over the cold war

Sep 27 2010, 3:23pm Anchor

Maybe the real problem is that this man is blaming America as a whole for what a few writers have decided to include in a video game?

Sep 27 2010, 3:32pm Anchor

Something featured in less then 1/10,000th (probably less then 1/100,000th or more) of all games and movies.

How often are Russians really the bad guys?? It's not even that common.

You're just more likely to see the ones with Russians in them because, you live in Russia. And most likely you will watch an action movie. Which will be some clash between nations. (super power tying in there again)

Sep 27 2010, 3:37pm Anchor

i reckon its coz they make the best enemies for games and stuff like that, since they have enough power to scare us

Sep 27 2010, 4:23pm Anchor

actually china is the biggest threat as of now... But they so silly, you can't really look at a chinaman villain with a straight face.

I just watched Transformers 2. Here is an exact quote from 23 minutes and 7 seconds into the movie. The leader of the robots is talking to an american government guy in a suit. This is what the suit guy says:

"I understand they arrived here after you sent a message into space. An open invitation to come to Earth, embedded by no one at the White House."

Notice how he states that who is allowed to come to Earth and who isn't is determined by the White House, thus the government of the USA (not to be mistaken for 'America', which is in fact a whole continent. The United States make out approx 23% of the total area of this continent). First that statement kind of ticked me off, but then it occurred to me how ridiculous the writers ignorance is and it made me smile.

You have to admit though, that as far as weapons development, Russia has produced some of the best. No surprise you see so many Russian made weapons in games. Problem being, that they're present in almost every conflict world wide. This and the fact that these arms are supplied without discretion to any buyer, group or organization with the funds ( we know who I mean ) only perpetuates the associative negative stereotype of Russia in the world arena. No surprise you see so many Russian made weapons in games and that some form of Russian military force is cast as the protagonist in many games.
