Well in my book the Gman is one of two things:
1=he is either someone from the future who has come and triggered all these events(from the resonance cascade to the combine invasion)for some reason that will be revealed at the end of the game(in this case he disappears so quicly as he appears because of his ability to travel in time) or
2=all the game is just an experiment and you are asleep.Gman is just the one who watches your progress throughout your 'dream' and quides you through it(in this case he DIS-appears so quicly because he can get in the dream whenever he wants)
If the second one is true then wtf worst story ever...I hope either the first is true or something else!

anyway that doesn't explain why the gman used alyx when she was little(its explained in episode two)

Maybe G-man's a master chef.

the g-mans a very neat kind of guy: always strighting his tye and brushing of his jacket. not some random idiot whos dicided hes going to blow the earth into a million peices!
anyway through out the games you see the g-man occasionly talking to someone. so that means...
maybe theres more than one g-man! cause i don't think i would let some random creep into a high level security bunker thingy without a reason... so
A. hes VERy important
B. he can travel through time and space e.g. you pass him in hl1 and hes leaving the faculity, later you see him having a argument with a scientist in a locked room.
C. he is being employed by someone higher up than him
D. hes a complete freak who stalks gordonfreeman.
also i noticed that when you go through the teleport in HL2 red letter day it looks the same as the back ground when the g-man chats with you.
and yes the g-man is master cheif ill show you:
Gmaster cheifMAN
lol

I don't think so. I remember hearing at some point--I believe it was on a PC gaming podcast-- that Valve essentially has a big book of the Half-Life story with all the details mapped out. Of course, I'm sure game play details evolve over time, because the popularity of things like the portal gun must influence Valve.

That's doesn't stop them making it up as they go along. The book could have been very empty when they started ;)

Indeed, that's generally what the best writers for games do (which is why episodic development for SP games makes sense). You can basically turn on a coin and change some pivotal parts of the story between episodes if things get too predictable or whatever.

lol agreed

does anyone here know who DOES voice the g-man??

Michael Shapiro does the voice for G-Man. He also does the voice for Barney, and people often cite this as a connection between the two characters, which I think is totally and utterly untrue. He's just a good voice actor.

lol maybe he wants alyx and he got the combine to kill her dad and now hes hunting you down so he can marry her cause i dont think she knows about him

Lol, anyway, i think Government man stays true since he does wear an suit and carries brief case. In my theory he has an teleportation device in his suitcase since the whole story does spin around the portals. And he was the one that gave the green crystal to the Black Mesa which most probably shows that he knew what it was going to do.

I think the G-man is a mysterious man searching for gifted beings for a ultimate mission. When he thought Gordon was a chosen one he set him off in HL2. And He kept Adrian Shephard in storage in case Gordon failed. The reason why he didn't choose Barney Calhoun is because he doesn't take things seriously.

--

(More Clear)  I think G-man is a Government Man (G-man) that works in the Supernatural/Phenomena department of the FBI and is looking for people who can do that mission, He was watching Gordon and brought him into HL2 while storing Adrian Shephard in case Gordon fails or is needed for A Phase II of the mission. He didn't pick Barney because he wasn't serious about his job/alcoholic

i think g-man is the person running the experiment after all half life one was just a test in g-mans words and halflife is probably some sort of job that gordon thinks is real  in a different place after the black mesa disaster and all your mates are in on it

then again gordon could just be on drugs did you ever stop to think what was in those health stations!

next the g-man is a really old spy from tf2

gordon is god and is being trained

gordan is in hell after he died

the g-man is gordans mum

gordan is in a real life thing like the truman show or something

g-man is just some bloke who happened to be walking around

g-man is the devil

g-man is god

gordan is they way animals see life

gordan is in a coma after eating a doughnut

g-man is this guy who knows you and your in a virtual really game

g-man is actually balder from balders gate

or g-man stands for gimik-man...

or valve was bored

g man could very well be gordon from the future
say, for instance, at the end of the half--life saga, something happens to gordon, and he is turned into the g man, who is forced to work for the combine or some intergalactic organiztion, and he decides to end their tyranny or whatever and he travels back in time to stop gordon from making a terrible mistake
i know its stupid but its something lol

Aug 12 2008, 2:40pm Anchor

Haha! Well, G-Man does look a little like a old Gordon... :P

I think.....that we are not supposed to know exactly who he is yet.
Maby in Half Life 2 Episode Three we will know.

Is there any connection between Half Life 2 Episode Tow to Portal???

Aug 13 2008, 1:32pm Anchor

@roie
yes i think the woman in portal is Alyx`s mum, but it`s only an idea.and yes i think the g-man is a gordon from an other timeline, in witch the combine enslaved the humanity and he comes to "our gordons" timeline to advise us.

Aug 13 2008, 3:14pm Anchor

G-Man... hmmm.... I think it's a very imaginative way of saying 'God-man'
Like who can stop time, say hello, move some stuff around and then disappear? Gordan's guardian angel? :P

I'm not sure about the Gman having a connection in HL2E2 and Portal, but there are hints in Portal that there's a connection to the HL2E2 storyline...and there are hints in HL2E2 that there is a connection to Portal. IE: An Aperture Science container being hoisted onto the Borealis in HL2E2, and a slide show about Aperture Science competing with Black Mesa for funding in Portal.
