Is there any new news on a Desura client for Linux? The last bit of information we received was from the poll Indiedb.com which showed Linux on top with 80% of the votes.

Thanks

I've come across Desura because I heard there was a linux port being made, which I am _very_ pleased to hear. I am new to the community and have tried to look up more information to the progress of the port or when development was started but to no real success. Anyone have a link to some quick FAQ or does such a thing exist? Details on the progress of the port would be very nice, I don't want to look like an idiot if I tell my friends :nervous:. We are used to vaporware just trying to get some solid information to try and make sure this is not the actual case here.

You have a windows client, its not vaporware... you also have the devs behind moddb making it, so its not like there gunna bugger off on you, as henley said its being developed, more details will come in the form of news posts from the desura group.

TKAzA, Thanks for the update.

TKAzA, you have just increased my doubt, you have stated nothing that allows the public to know about the current development of Desura for Linux. Throwing out names of people that are making it just tells me you have no idea how the development is actually going, nor did you say you knew what was going on. What I like to see is a time line, for exmaple, of when they started and when they expect to release more data as to the development of the port. A screen shot of a beta client anything besides, "we are making it and we will release more details later" as this implies development is not really progressing and we really do not have anything to present. Just to be clear I am _not_ pointing fingers at you, you never said you knew anything about the port to Linux.

Let us be serious how hard is it to make a port to Linux I am not actually sure if development has actually started but it seems it has been going on for but I would guess a few months by now. If this is the case then it would be apparent that Desura has a very small development team or does not know what they are doing.

If you have no idea about game porting then please don't go around pissing off others.

May 28 2011 Anchor

Dragonlord I know enough to know that a client port is not that hard to do, correct me if I am wrong but this is what they are doing not porting games over to Linux. If they have nothing to show thus far then it looks like a grim road for the Desura Linux port.

We ARE a small team, no ifs or buts about it. The project is very complex just saying oh it should be easy seems a little unfair. We are very dedicated developers, it takes time. Have faith there will be news soon.

Hype isnt a good marketing tool.

As a key tester on the internal desura beta and personally knowing the developers, i have some idea of whats going on, however im not in a position to give timelines any real details and to be fair, like dave said the team is small, what expectations do you have for a team with one programmer to set a timeline on a port of a application thats still being worked on?

GenToo wrote: What I like to see is a time line, for exmaple, of when they started and when they expect to release more data as to the development of the port.

Desura was being made with no public knowledge, it was released for public testing, with no timeline specified date on when the beta would end, the windows client is still receiving multiple updates a day and works still being done on the games collection and marketing systems and API, so why would the desura team push through a port of a client still undergoing some major changes and work?

That last part is just damm rude.

That's just it, and its a good point. If Desura sets a timeline now, it means having to get the build out by that deadline, forcing stressful crunch time on the team. Its a burden that honestly they could do without because all it means is having to then deal with post-release issues, and that makes the product look bad in the end which in turn reflects poorly on the developers. What they're doing is the right way, and its wrong to tell them to do otherwise. A nice casual release where the team can say "Yep its done now" is better than a rushed release.

I think Desura has been very effective in communicating with the public. Eventually the linux client would go to beta, its at that stage that they can safely begin making things a bit more transparent. They're still working on the whole thing, its not gone into beta yet.. so the public doesn't have to know.

We will have the first update soon, but we are not commiting to dates as we don't want to set expectations until we have something 100% certain. Still a while yet.

I'm happy it's being worked on and that the developers are being honest.
