Just played Journey for the first time, and yup, gotta say that was amazing as well. Definitely the best PS3 game I've played so far.

I second Hoverdog on the Planescape: Torment choice. The 2D art on that game is pretty much perfect, it took the old Infinity engine and managed to get the best out of it. It might look low- res and choppy now, but I think it's the best looking old school RPG out there.

And that's not even mentioning the story and characters, just perfect.

Okami.
Beautiful art, beautiful story, beautiful characters, beautiful gameplay, beauty overdose.

For the lucky ones with high-end pc and 3D monitor, I highly recommend Trine2. By far the most beautiful 3D experience I had.

Homeworld 2 - I definitely have great time playing it

Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood. The music , story, gameplay and graphics are fantastic. You just don't get the sense of free roam any better then when your jumping from building to building.

That would be Skyrim (with mods) for me. I don't think I've ever enjoyed walking around in the wilderness more than in that game. As long as you stay away from NPCs and quests that is...
...and no, I'm not just talking about graphics but more the world design itself, birch trees and snowy plains for example, with much fitting ambient music.

Other than that maybe... Mirrors Edge? Or am I going to get flamed for mentioning that game.

Surgeon Simulator.

I mean...damn. It's just so good.

Not me! I loved that game. The only thing I didn't particularly like about it was that they stick the player indoors just a wee bit too often for a free running game. But still, it's one of the few linear single player games I've actually replayed, and I've been thinking of playing it again recently...

Just Cause 2 IMO, its just pretty as fuck.. even with its dated by today's standard graphics its still a joy to look at.

Bastion.

IMHO years the most beautiful games came out
1994-2001 pixelart-based/sprite-based graphics games
2007-present 3D graphics games

To name a few: Fallout, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate I & II, Icewind Dale I & II, Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, C&Cs (cinematic cutscenes), Warcraft II, GTA II, GTA IV, Crysis 1, and many many more.

imho the middle period (2000-2006) when the industry was moving from 2D to 3D or slowly experimented with 3D bred the least graphically appealing v-games.

PS everything above includes story/music as well. Can't think of any PC games from 2001-2006 that were truly beautiful. For example Age of Empires III had too candy graphics and in-game animated cutscenes instead of cinematic ones like AoE had etc. same for 3D-cartoony Warcraft III. Same for GTA III. Regarding AoE III, WC III and GTA III, only their high playability/gameplay mattered because imho their graphics were rather repulsive.

Can't judge any other games released back in 2002-2006 that i didn't play right then such as Half-Life 2.

Trine 2 looks amazing, sounds amazing

Suikoden 2. The art in the game is as beautiful as any 2D jRPG can be, but what really gets it is the storyline. Nothing over any medium, in my opinion, even approaches the complexity and thoughtfulness of the story in that game.

Having an awful time picking between Metro 2033 and Yume Nikki. Both are really compelling games.

It's hard to pick just one but I really liked the art in these games:

Realistic: Battlefield 3 / Crysis -series
Hand-painted: Diablo 3 / Torchlight 2
2D/retro: Final Fantasy 6 / Kirby's Adventure (the latter is considered the best-looking NES game of all time by many)

Metal Slug... can't choose... Anthology. Out of the Anthology probably X.
Most games I'd list here would be from Japan btw.
Also Isometric view can look terrific.

OOO bioshock 2 ;) and crysis, and of course, HALO 4, made me sad :(

May 31 2013, 8:07am Anchor

Hmm, that's a tough one. There are numerous one's that I think are pretty close.

  • Halo Series
  • Mass Effect Series
  • Rift
  • The Elder Scrolls Series
  • Dawn of War Series

Sadly that's all I can think of (on top of that I haven't really played as many games as the community probably has), but then again it is 5 in the morning and I haven't slept...
