What can I do to speed up DOOM 3? Thread

I feel like I have been ripped off on DOOM 3. My computer specs are awesome but I still get some lag on the lowest resolution, graphics, and other settings.

My specs are...

3.0 GHZ
1.25 GB RAM
128mb GeForce 5200
60 GB of space

Why the hell isn't it running like glass? Do I need to get a 256 mb GFX card?

This is really pissing me off.

my dad has abit more powerful, and far cry at full specs owned it

dont have doom 3 though..

I have a Radeon 9200 Pro 128mb laying around. Should I stick that one in? How much would it help?

Probly alot. And make sure Antialiasing is off that helps loads and if you dont need them turn off shadows.

But dont expect to get good resoultions or settings with that card. Buy a 9600xt for a $100 bucks its worth it.

Put it in a car and make it drive really fast

But yeah its your graphics card other then that your computer is really good

You can edit the doomconfig.cfg file and change the following things to make
the game run better:

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "xxx" <- Make this 1/4th of your memory
seta image_cacheMinK "yyy" <- Use the formula below:

"image_cacheMegs" / 8 = n
n * 1024 = "image_cacheMinK"

Also, you can try to change the following settings, which will disable
bump mapping in the game.

seta image_filter from GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR to GL_LINEAR

you could do the following, to gain a few FPS:

seta image_anisotropy "1"
to
seta image_anisotropy "0"

yeah, my k7 950 w/ gf2gts surpassed shorty's big gffx5200 rig in Farcry.

Im using a 9200 128mb with a 2.8ghz and 1024mb ddr and doom3 runs reasonably smoothly at medium detail and 800x600. Main thing is the gfx card,it won't get any better for you or I untill we get a getter gfx card. The 5200 and 9200 are the very bottom of the pile, I mean heck mass produced pcs for 'offices' come with 9600's these days.

Well no Doom 3 for me. I have a radion 9000. I'm so screwed.

First off, your system specs are not awesome and as Cheapie said your graphics card is terrible.

Anyway theres plenty of tweak guides on the net, also you may want to check out planetDoom's forums to get some config tweaks.

They're pretty good. Better than mine -.-

He has the recommended for doom not the required so they are pretty awsome.

My system can run Doom 3 in ultra @ 1024res with 60fps generally, it doesnt make my system awesome.

If I had a naff card that makes my PC not awesome, but terrible.

Fine his computer is good without going into the realm of ridicuolus specs.

You could also go into your doom base directory and find the pak000 to pak004 files and using winrar unpak them into the base folder this ull use up around 3gig but speeds the game up considerably

Um. .. that only really affects loading times. And not even that much.

Made a big difference for me ... and i got some card as you ... ah well
