Space Ambassador

Mazlan Othman [pictured above], a Malaysian astrophysicist, is set to be tasked with co-ordinating humanity’s response if and when extraterrestrials make contact.

Aliens who landed on earth and asked: “Take me to your leader” would be directed to Mrs Othman.

She will set out the details of her proposed new role at a Royal Society conference in Buckinghamshire next week.

The 58-year-old is expected to tell delegates that the proposal has been prompted by the recent discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other starts, which is thought to make the discovery of extraterrestrial life more probable than ever before.

Mrs Othman is currently head of the UN’s little known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa).

In a recent talk to fellow scientists, she said: “The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day human kind will received signals from extraterrestrials.

So what's your opinion about this?

Told you humans either must have invented/taken spaceship in late fifties (the point in the recent history where UFO phenomenon and popularisation really began), or they will be able to make an antigravitational (/ultraspeed) aircraft up to next 100 years. But thinking about appointing a man (erm, a woman) to greet extraterrestrials? What's this?

Ok thanks for the notice ... I'll be sure to direct them to her if they ever ask me ...

(seriously though ... if they find us before we find them ... we're screwed, the odds of them wanting to be galactic buddies is pretty minuscule ...)

Shit; if we have any chance of seeing aliens in our lifetime.. then it is most likely that they are already here.

I think its a good idea to have an ambassador for this. In my opinion; we should already have an alien visitors' center set up!

So who is paying for her salary?

Sep 28 2010 Anchor

The same people who pay the UN. I heard the US pays the most into it, not sure though... I'm sure all the countries in it contribute what they can.

But now that we've got an ambassador for aliens... ...Who from the UN is going to lead us through the zombie apocalypse?

...maybe not have a person specified as the ambassador, the people of the UN as a whole should be the ambassadors, not one random woman.

I think she gave a pretty "cool" reply, though.

About the ambassdor - I think it should be Jean-Luc Picard. After all he's one of the fleet's most accomplished Captains and descendant of a long line of explorers!

Yeah, an update:

But still, she will be one of the panelists of Royal Society meeting titled "Towards a scientific and societal agenda on extra-terrestrial life":
Royalsociety.org

Topics of debates:
Calling ET, or not even answering the phone?
Societal questions raised by the detection of extra-terrestrial life
What could studies of extra-terrestrial life tell us about the future of humanity?
Extra-terrestrial life and arising political issues for the UN agenda

What do they have in mind?
