Being a n00b to the modding scene (look at my number of posts), i want to create a mod gradually, probably over the space of a year. I don't really have any good original ideas a mod so it will be a "people's mod", taking lots of random people's ideas and squashing them into a mod for an easy to mod engine. What would be the best game to mod for a beginner modder?

By the way if anyone already has any ideas please post them!

AND IF HE SEES THIS, THANKYOU KARUTO FROM YOUR EXTREMELY USEFUL GETTING STARTED MODDING TUTORIAL.

No offence, but there are lots of projects out there like this, and none of them actually work; at best they turn into half-baked CS clones.

But, on the other hand, good luck and if you're a beginner check out the HL SDK, there's LOTS of documentation for it, and mapping is fairly intuitive

my game will probably just be a simple deathmatch game anyway with hardly anything unique, all I need is the experience to become a experienced modder. Thankyou for your support anyway and i will check it out. Where do you get it from?

dude I would go with the Quake engine because even if you do get past the whole mapping/modelling you still need to code... do you know any C++? do any of your friends know C++ ...its not likely, Quake code is extremely simple compared to the complexities of C++ and the mapping/modelling is basically the same. Ask someone like Cheapalert or Hammy-Bob about Quake they know a hell of alot more than I do about it. :P

Hey, you're welcome for the modding tutorial. I'm very happy to see people are making use of it :D I need to update it to the Half-Life 2 version as well sometime :)

Are you sure you want to take everyone's ideas and cram them together? I think the best thing to do for you is stick with your deathmatch scheme of keeping it simple, asnd just adding in your own weapons, models, skins, textures, maps, etc. That way, although you won't be totally original, it'll at least give you some real nice experience of building yourself up to a TC mod (Total Conversion mod).

I recommend the Half-Life SDK since there's a lot more community support for it (which equals more help) and a lot more tutorials :)

Half-life and Quake is the same shit, and it's all C not C++ afaik.

However Quake has the advantage that the source was opened so you can make your own standalone client for it, so no one needs the original to play it.

Quake2 in fact has been open a while and it's rumoured Q3 soruce will be released soon.

O_o

Right - John Carmack said the Q3 source code would be released GPL by the end of the year. :D

Exactly, not a rumour for the Q3 source, even I knew that. :P

Quake is programmed in QuakeC, a small scripting language. The source is coded in C. It would be easier for a beginnner to tinker with Quake. There is a lot of support present in the Quake community, you just have to look for it. Half-Life would prove more difficult for a newbie, due to the C++ programming that you need to do to add all things code related. Attaining the software to compile the DLL's Half-Life needs is not only expensive, but C++ is in itself, an extremely complex language with a huge range of features, and one can not simply learn it in a week or two. Unless they have prior experiance with C, but they still need to spend the time learning all the workings of that.

So, my verdict: Quake. :)

Half-life is C not C++ isn't it?

Wait, John Carmack actually mentioned a release date? For the most part, it's just been a "when it's done" speculation :P

Carmack has pushed back the Q3A GPL source release back a bit. We're still waiting for Quake IV to arrive before he does that as far as I'm aware. (Damn, I've had that on pre-order for nearly two years )
