tnathan475 wrote:yeah thats more than pretty hot for your CPU to get especially if it isnt at full load. (a GPU around 70 degrees at load depending on type of GPU is fine). More than likely you crippled your CPU and perhaps the socket on the motherboard when the heatsink was not correctly applied, excessive heat can do alot of damage especially over a long time. best bet- get a new CPU and motherboard (core 2 duos are pretty cheap now). you could try leaving your case lid open and pointing a desk fan at it too, but i think your kinda boned. how much thermal compound did you use by the way?
I followed online instructions which had told me to use the equivalent of 1 uncooked grain of rice (pretty precise I must say) and yes, both the heatsink and the CPU was clean of the thermal pad that had previously been there, that was later removed. My case lid was always open, and my heatsink has its own fan that runs at around 1200 RPM. Assaultman67 wrote:

So you just had the heat sink resting on top of the CPU? Basically yea, for a little under a year which I bet really crippled my CPU... ? holy crap ... and you played games on it That has to be a low watt CPU or it would have burned up months ago ... Toyoka wrote:and having the heatsink/CPU now properly applied with a silicon-based
heatsink compound; it still seems to produce a lot of heat, almost as much as before I did all of this. Did you remember to clean the surface of the CPU and the heat sink via a q-tip (or something) with rubbing alcohol before you applied the compound? Spector wrote:The P4 is just a hot processor, mine runs at 73C (which is the maximum temp for my specific processor.) Granted its 5 years old now, but it still runs inside the specs.
Intel's P4's do run hot ... i remember discussions about Intel chips having problems dissipating heat fast enough ... My advice? gut an old mini fridge and rig it to work on the inside of the case ... then hermetically seal the case and remove all moisture ... (this is a joke, although, ive always wanted to try it Yup, I myself am surprised it hasn't died on me thus far. In fact, its running on a 550W silent fan power supply since I upgraded my HD and graphics card to an 8600 GTS (about a year or so ago). My computer is also kind of old, been upgrading it slowly ever since, but not drastically. I'll probably get a new motherboard/CPU, but I'm a bit tight on money and my parents don't want me to spend heavily because we are all kind of in a tight budget since my dad moved to Alberta till who knows when for some crappy job that payed half the amount he was getting when he worked here back home. Anyway, seems like my power supply isn't working at the moment, I'm too tired today so I'll diagnos the problem tomorrow. *yawn* Edit: It seems my power supply fan hasn't been spinning either... god damnit Edited by: Toyoka |

For anyone interested in the NEOTOKYO mod, I suggest you get it via torrent. 638 seeder(s), 184 leecher(s) = 822 peer(s) total Over 400 more seeds than leechers = awesome for anyone wanting it sooner, it seems the majority of people will have taken up most of the direct download servers. hehe. But by tomorrow, it shouldn't really matter which you choose. |

Well, I was lucky, the direct download was just release a few minutes after I discovered the torrent was released, I paused the torrent and started a directdownload which was only peaking 70, at this moment the torrent was peaking 120. I cancelled the direct download and started up the torrent and whey! It shot up to 300 and even went onto around 450. Not that it made much of a difference anyway. I didn't play it till 1pm as I kinda needed to sleep. |

So, if I take my table fan away, since someone else needs it.. my motherboard temperature raises over 45 celsius. Some PC Probe program had a motherboard temp warning at 45 celsius, which was the minimum/default setting in the program. So I raised it to 60, same as CPU temperature warning level. Is this ok? -- Quote:How about I give you the phonecall and you give me my finger! |

How do they even measure the temperature of your motherboard? My motherboard is multiple temperatures. (in different spots of course) Edited by: ngs616 |

It's some 1 and half year old... The temprature has stabilized to 50 celsius now after 2 hours without the table fan, that's about 15 degrees more than the temperature with the table fan. CPU seems to stay the same with or without the table fan... No idea how/where the motherboard temperature comes... Edited by: Jimi |

Welcome to Australian maths. They shove nothing but algebra and analysing sample data. They teach you nothing new, only just repeating that. Worst of all neither of these will really help you at all later on. -- Can you tell me doctor why I still can't get to sleep? |
