Texture stuff Thread

Is it illegal to nick textures from other games?
Like, say I was making a quake1 map, could I use textures from other games, like Quake2 or 3 or Half life? Without getting wasted for it.

Because I have seen Textures from Unreal used in Quake1 maps alot, just wondered if your allowed to do it.
Ive been mapping for Quake for years but never used textures from any other game, it would be cool to have other textures in.

Yes it is illegal.

Its been done in mods before. I don't know why they don't do it them selves.

* Generating map with textures games you own: legal.
* Download maps with textures games you not own: illegal.

English version joke:

Maybe you can find FREE texture substitutions. For quake1 you have the qe1retexturing project. Other projects exist for Doom, etc...

Change the copyrighted by some other with FREE rights, or from friendly artist that give you permissions.

A wounded soldier is captured and taken to a German concentration camp. Because he is seriously wounded, they must amputate his leg and he requests that they throw it on England. It cant be illegal say if you used CS textures to make a CS map.... or do you mean its illegal to say, us CS textures to make your own MOD.

Actually it is okay to use the textures from other games because you ain't selling your map. But it busts those ebay scams alot stronger

Nehahra had Q3 textures and Hexen 2 textures in.

So When I make a Quake1 map I can use the textures from
Quake3/quake2 ?

Because im making a map right now that looks amazing in the textures ive used but the quake1 theme doesnt really go right with it.

Also, Im rubbish at making textures

Thought it wasnt illegal, that would just be silly.
