Tactical RTS MMO ? (Forums : Ideas & Concepts : Tactical RTS MMO ?) Post Reply

Currently FPS MMO's are being made like huxley and borderland. I have been waiting for those types of games to be made. I personally enjoy the co-op experience a lot.
I don't know of any Dawn of War  or C&C type games that are MMO. What do you guys think would be a must for this type of game if the professionals went at it?

What i can think of is.
-Not WW2
-Customization for a hero and sub heros. Customize equipment of units based on your mission.
-PPl can post missions toward some grand campaign goal
-play a lot like company of heroes (without retarded vehicles)
-ai controlled nations to beat on for quests
-supply system .You get cut off so you starve or run out of amo.(Leet ranger type units last longer)
-capture on the promises of Supreme Commander that were never realized.

Originally i understood supreme commander was going to have this whole element of recon and stealth. Radar pings ,scout planes, and having to spend a great deal of effort to figure out where your enemy was and what he was doing. Not the whole start out in predetermined spots and sending mass waves.
I think the whole element of wide open space and being able to attack objectives from any direction is important with concealment of your movements and reconing so you can take advantage of any weakness.

Personally I love strategy games , especially the CnC series. I would love to see some sort of multiplayer centered around massive RTS battles.
I can't think of anything exactly like what you've stated.

However:
I really enjoyed participating in the beta for World in Conflict. You definately needed to work with your comrades to take the objectives. Splitting up the different branches of the military was a fantastic idea, and really cause everyone to work together. Strat points were always cool, everyone started filtering them all to one player to buy nukes quicker.

As for an MMO RTS, I can't really see hundreds of players all playing simulataneously in a large RTS battle. You could probably try something with lot's of players , each with their own rank.
Have a Commander and everyone else could be Lieutenants that have control of maybe 2 to 3 squads of 6 soldiers. Each sqaud could be customized to each Lieutenant's liking. You might be able to purchase specialized soldiers to make squad specific jobs such s "Engineering" "Artillary" "Armor" "Spec-OP" "Infantry", . In order for a battle to be won you might need a combination of these different roles/squads. For example you might need the "combat Engineer" squad to blow a hole through an enemy fortification, and you might use your "Infantry" squad to help suppress enemy units. The commander could have an overview like map where they can see all the squads positions an dtheir current status (Killed, wounded, morale, ammo, ect.) He could set objectives and waypoints for his men form ther. He could also recieve request from different Lieutenants in the field for things like "Artillary/Air Support" or "Supply Drop" and chose where to send the support.

This could cause interesting situations such as: Lietenant 1's squad 2 is a combat engineer squad that needs to blow a hole through the enemy's defensive line, but has run out of explosive charges, Lieutenant 1 requests a supply drop. Meanwhile Lieutenant 2's "infantry" unit is pinned down by enemy armour and are requesting immediate close air support.

Players could get online, buy their squads (2-3 max), purchase weapons and ammo and outfit them for battle. Then players could take a look at maps in progress and join as "re-inforcements" at a specific designated time in the battle. Or they could join a fresh battle and be preparing to start. Each battle would consist of anywhere from 2 to 20 Lietenants (split evenly on each side) on a medium to large scale map filled with objectives for both sides.

Another interesting feature would be to add something simmilar to the "Suppressed" system from Brothers in Arms. In which squads could take cover behind almost anything, and could suppress enemy soldiers into staying in their cover, meanwhile another squad could move to flank the enemy position.

I would love to see a MMO RTS simmilar to what I've described above. I'm not quite sure how feasable this all is, but it seems to share alot of simmilar elements of WIC, just on a bigger scale.

I think the Warhammer MMO was originally RTT. Of course, they're chasing World of Warcraft now instead. :/

Hmmm, I like smaller, more focused team battles. Here's a game I would want to play:

Each player controls a small squad of 3-4 units, each can specialize and level up. You would take your 3-4 specialized units and join a larger force with other players and fight AI or player-controlled forces in a large, persistent, and living terrain.

The game would be extremely tactical and force you to micromanage your squad, whereas your team commanders can give your squad missions to carry out.

Each player would then tailor their own tiny squad for a specialized use on the battlefield, such as an all mobile combat squad, or a sniper and infiltration team. By specializing your role you can coordinate with other players to carry out reconnaissance, sabotage, base infiltration, piracy, etc.

I played a game called Shattered Galaxy a few years back. Great MMORTS. Don't know if its still the same game I enjoyed or not. I'd recommend checking it out.

Basic concept was there are three nations, each at war w/ the other (and I think there was a mercenary faction too). Each nation controlled territories, the goal is to fight your way to the enemy capitol. By fighting you earn money, you use the money to buy and upgrade units in your squad/platoon/whatever. You can initiate a battle on adjacent enemy territories at any time but you better hope someone will back you up. Each nation also has a government which I never really got deep enough into to know about.

Seems Mflux captured what this sort of game should be like. Although I think you would need at least two seperate teams or squads for times when your playing alone so you can flank by yourself. I like the whole specialization idea which mimics rpg character classes.
Shattered Galaxys seems like a amazing game for its time. It would be a good example to model such a game. Governments would be cool. Throwing in some elements of Hearts of Iron would be interesting if any1 ever played that game. I would play such a game for months.
Any1 have a take on what direction the art should go? Futuristic infantry or maybe you control armored core type mechs.

well, i think there should be like 5or six different faction/countrys that would be at war and you choose a side and get to control like a squad of six or so Very basic units and from there each individual unit gains experiance and upgrades. and you can specialize your squad by outfitting them with certain weapons and items to make them more fit for the task.and you work with other people on capturing enemy citys and such until that fraction is wiped out.and i think futuristic is they way to go. something like bf 2142 art style exept not the crappy gameplay :p.
