Dunno, I've heard rumours of quite a few deaths in the UK, but nothing confirmed.

No... I think there have only been deaths in Mexico, last I heard was 108 deaths.

Personally, I appreciate the governments of the world over-reacting instead of allowing this flu to spread, potentially causing world wide problems. It never hurts to be a bit over cautious in these situations, especially with the damage this flu has already done. So in a sense they aren't blowing it out of proportion, just prepping for the worse. They're not restricting air travel, or quarantining (I almost typed contaminated, lol) whole areas that are showing signs of infection, but they are being cautious (IIRC, they closed down the schools in the Queens).

At least you guys are treating this some what seriously. Everyone on the L4D forums is going nuts over the possibility of a possible zombie pandemic >_>.

If the numbers are pretty much dead on for Mexico then this has the potential to kill ~18-22 million people in the US alone. It is the apocalypse for non-Alvians.

Bird'sflu, Pig's Flu, Mad Cow deasease, twitter wales...what are we doing to the animals? Kind of just it would come back at us, and most obviously something is wrong with the way we produce food and keep cattle. I think for livestock at least there should be worldwide standards, because if every farmer is only competing to be cheaper than his neighbor, there will be corruption. It doesn't matter, if it's the Tour de France, or raising cattle, issue is the same. +
If not this time, this type of virus will become a problem, in the future. I find it disturbing how the news foster panic instead of informing. I'm not one to go crazy with fear at such a notice, but I still don't know how it's transmitted and how contagious the desease really is. It seems like this is far more dangerous than the bird flu, though.

The situation here in Italy is all under control, there aren't any known affected people.

The best one just happened here in Switzerland. They carried some small container with flu virii for further examination and some dick head but the cooling ice directly in the glass instead of outside of it. Guess what somewhere along the train ride it burst so they had to quarantine all people in the entire train. Tripping part of it? It's the same train I use to get to university just that today I had been elsewhere :P

Lucky Croatia! The Irish Government announced today that we have NOTHING to combat the virus if it comes to a serious outbreak here! And there's already been 10 confirmed cases of it within the past few days! So like... WTF? This present government aint got a clue! Either that or they simply dont give a rats ass! Grrr! lol.

No its pretty much the same as the regular flu.

Quote:The CDC recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses. The virus isolates that have been tested from the US and Mexico are however resistant to amantadine and rimantadine.[35] If a person gets sick, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and make the patient feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

Its really just strains of the flu that are spreadable by swine. I think its been blown out of proportion, but better safe then sorry.

Yup! But apparently you have to medicate a hell of a lot sooner than you would with regular flu otherwise the chances of it becoming fatal are seriously increased! But yea... Common Flu medications are said to do the trick if you are diagnosed sooner rather than later. However, I pity those without enough cop-on to do something about it as soon as they feel flu like symptoms. Not everyone watches the news and/or reads the newspapers! Poor sods!

Medicating moderate influenza strains such as Swine Flu is a bad idea, generally. People are unlikely to medicate quickly to limit transmission enough to counteract the potential problem of antiviral resistant strains becoming dominant. Instead, if you experience flu-like symptoms you should clean your hands often, clean surfaces you touch, avoid excessive contact, 'enjoy' your favorite flu-symptom relieving medication, and see a doctor if symptoms worsen or persist.

SinKing wrote:I think for livestock at least there should be worldwide standards

Which not everyone can afford. Outside of most post-industrialized nations a largest percentage of the population are rural farmers, and this is where these develop. I know China, India, and a few others who would never accept what would amount to extensive pressures necessary to control this.

orion2sirius wrote:The Irish Government announced today that we have NOTHING to combat the virus if it comes to a serious outbreak here!

This is not the usual strain of cyclical influenza, and as such has a different antigen. Beyond the usual methods of controlling the spread of a virus, it would be implausible to have something to combat a virus immediately.

Assaultman67 wrote:Ironically, it kills the people with the strongest immune system

Doubtful, though the virus isn't impeded in infection by stronger immune systems since few people have a proper immune response for this strain. Having a healthy immune system will still allow a faster response, however.

orion2sirius wrote:But apparently you have to medicate a hell of a lot sooner than you would with regular flu otherwise the chances of it becoming fatal are seriously increased

If medicating, medicating the earliest possible is best, but "seriously increased" is a gross exaggeration.

This is another influenza strain, combated in the same manner, but will take a slightly greater toll than previous ones due to a general lack of immune response in most people who may get infected.
