Skinnable Mod Profiles | Locked | |

One thing I have noticed about the modDB which a few sites are doing, now that the image gallery has been installed is that they are using their mod's profile as their mods home on the web. Now this is terrific, and all but I feel modifications may like a more personalised profile look which is why I am proposing skinnable mod profiles to see what you all think. Basically the way it would work is that mods can specify the basic color scheme they want. They can then do 100% manual HTML allowing maximum freedom. Here is a little demo just to show you how it would work
In a nutshell all elements currently shown in a modifications profile are available to the mod author. The only difference is that they specify the color scheme, and can control where each little thing is shown. Images will of course be able to be uploaded, so if done well the page could be 100% customised and would barely look like modDB at all! What do you reckon bout this idea? -- Scott Reismanis |

Great idea mate, but possibly abit too much freedom to tinker... How about the same layout but with some kind of setup where colours can be specified.. kinda like a moddb css file but in a table... with a kinda setup like |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | but with more elements that can be modified EDIT : only problem with that is the images for the beleled edges n shit so hmmm - Edited By BigBird On Mon 16th, Dec 2002 @ 10:21:53pm -- BigBird Mod DB Guy |

great idea, i think it would allow mods to look unique rather than look like a clone of another mod. |

It'll allow them to virtually create there entire mod page on the modDB. Because the modDB supports mod news, it has an image gallery, help wanted, i will make it so the forum can be integregrated so i mean virtually there entire page fully customised and designed to there liking can be done. As for keeping it simple, that is the aim but it shant be easy I don't believe Still this feature will be a while off, have a few more to implement prior plus I have to code up a site for oktagone which I shall be doing and hopefully completing soon. -- Scott Reismanis |

this might be slightly too much freedom... also, the color scheme should be admin verified before it is let loose on the db, so that we dont end up with horrendous color schemes. also, maybe make it so that certain items are custimizable, sorta like having custom sections, but have general areas that all mods would have in common, sort of like the current top header most of all, do NOT allow ppl to freely change colors if u want to keep ur sanity (and eyesight) -- ___________________________

whos balls? dont you mean, the balls in your court? anyhoo sounds like a good idea INtense, i think giving people a free (awesome) forum is giving too much, people will be distracted from the original forums, and conversations will be all over the place! -- Sometimes I wish I was you, then I could be friends with me. |

No, if they make it vile then people wont visit and they shoot themselves in the foot. Us admins (or supposid 3 dotters who do the 'proper' work dont have much time to auth mods, yet alone page details. -- Why wont it save me? |

Each forum system would be self contained as if it were a separete one so the madness would not spread. Modifications would be able to virtually create and manage there entire webpage via the modDB. I dunno it'll be a while off before it is implemented I just wanted to scope out what peoples thoughts were on this idea. So far it is a mixed response but thumbs up overall. -- Scott Reismanis |

mayby have it mor like the other features that are already available, like the link image, have it so mods can select a logo that is standard banner size like for topsite links. Then have color schemes customizeable and mayby have an extended info section that mayby has some more features vut this way it would keep more control on it and not have it so people can just screw up the entire page even though i believe many respectable mods won't do this. |

there should be some form of uniformity through out the db though... we cant just have everyone have their own thing, else it would be to chaotic, and, lets face it, some ppl havent the slightest idea how to make a presentable webpage -- ___________________________

I'm all in favour, but then how do you explain the need for another site when registering if modDB is going to be used as the home? Maybe a 'Basic Plot/Concept' thing if you have no website? |
||

Dec 21 2002 Anchor | |
Obviously I shall cater for this, whereby you can say 'use modDB as your mods homepage' for example -- Scott Reismanis |

Sorry I should have clarified this *right* at the start! Anyhow there would be nothing worse than 700 mods all with 100% customised and altered profiles. Finding the information you need on all of them would be impossible and it would defeat the purpose of this site, which is to provide plenty of info all within very easy grasp! The way it would work, is there would be the standard mod profile, then there would be the 'customised' one. So you would choose the visit the custom one if you wished to. -- Scott Reismanis |

sounds like a plan! Tho how will people specify how, for example, the individual comments look. Will it be a seperate HTML file for each section or some clever parsing?
A bit more customisable than just <!-- LIST_COMMENT --> *me rambles on too much edit: HTML tags (e.g. < br>) shouldn't be read by the browser in code blocks... - Edited By jacksonj04 On Sun 22nd, Dec 2002 @ 3:43:17pm |

if thats the way ur gonna do it, go right ahead!!!! there should be some lame "web builder" thingie, so that ppl can incorporate parts of moddb into their site too... i dunno, i think it might be kinda handy... -- ___________________________

It'll be some clever parsing and I am sorry but the structure of things such as the comments news etc.. will remain exactly as it is the only difference is you will be able to control the colors, its location and the HTML around it. That is all -- Scott Reismanis |

sounds like a plan!!!! and that is in addition to web space, or in place of? -- ___________________________
