this book you speak of .. " "THE GOLD 45 REVOLVER: THE 45SURF HERO'S JOURNEY IN ARTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP & TECHNOLOGY"--the mythological roadmap to reaping billions of dollars in tomorrow's videogames, while exalting a cultural renaissance."

That better be a joke. How are you going to write a book on making billions of dollars in video games when you haven't even made one?

Please quote and answer this question, Dr. McGucken

Against the growth of the corporate-state? Wouldn't the author of the patent and all of these ideas be the same person who is profiting gratuitously should this idea succeed? I mean, it almost seems hypocritical.

Also, I notice that the one blog post there says that one of the problems with Bioshock was that you could embrace a vice and still win the game. As I stated before:

Someone wrote:It is the choice to do what we feel is morally correct that can give a game more emotion and moral value than it would otherwise have.

Someone wrote:Imagine how many millions would want to play such novel game types wherein *ideas had consequences*, and soul, character, and honor mattered! Litertaure including 1984, Animal Farm, A Brave New World, V is for Vendetta, The Matrix, Twilight, Atlas Shrugged, Dracula, and 300 could all be brought to life on a more profound level!

Someone mentioned "Starwars RPG" before. Starwars Knights of the Old Republic already goes exactly that. Ideas have consequences (your choices can turn you to the light or the dark side) and soul, character, and honor do matter on the light side. The only difference is that the character is free to turn to the dark side if he so wishes.

I don't believe you have a billion dollar idea.

Edit:

I doubt we will ever get a direct response to any of our questions or observations.

Also, after looking at some of his links, they do not directly address what he is talking about. I believe the idea here is to make it look like something is going on where it really isn't; that's to say that he has a site with a lot of text talking about his ideas, but nothing has been produced so far, as far as I can tell. There is no way to know if this is what the people want if you haven't even given them a real sample yet.
That said, you would gain a considerable amount of respect from me if your next post did not contain a wall of text but instead addressed each of our recent comments individually, and without a bit of superficial text and a million links.

libertariangames wrote:Did J.R.R. Tolkien have to build a working demo of Lord of The Rings on the Torque Game Engine before they made the highly-successful game?

No, it was already an extremely successful book and movie. And the actual development of the game had nothing to do with Tolkien, aside from taking place in his universe. If it wasn't already a success it never would have been created.

libertariangames wrote:The "Ideas Have Consequences" Zombie/Vampire game engine is novel in that the Zombie/Vampire virus/quality is transmitted via ideas in the game--both spoken and written--as opposed to only via physical contact, such as being bitten/attacked/etc.

How is a physicist going to say something like this.

.................------------------------------

You're making many of the mistakes beginners make, but on an extreme level.

Well. I've read what you've written, and I've read at least half of the literary works you're referring to. Of your patent I've read three, maybe four pages. I really lost it when you mentioned that 1984 could be improved. Come on.

What is it that you're licensing? A morality based consequence mechanic, preferably morality of your personal preferences? It has nothing to do with game development! At one point you're illustrating a dialogue tree, it has been done! Such games have rarely been very successful, and while there are some artistic merit to them, they wont make you a billionaire. A strong foundation of "healthy" moral values wont change that. The amount of work you have put into a game like this is huge. This patent wont make the workload easier, if you had invested your time in writing an engine or a RPG framework perhaps, but these are just lofty ideas. Lofty ideas that have been realized to some degree. Try to look past the (un)moral values and see it from a technical standpoint, you'll realize that it has been done.

that explains everything ...

Maybe i should stop visiting this thread ... i try to read it ... see a post longer than my screen ... blank out while scrolling down by clicking my mouse wheel and dragging  ... then i end up at the bottom of the page and have to ask myself "What did i learn?" ... when i already know the answer to that question ...

Care tell the ignorants like me on why him being Dr. McGucken would be relevant?

It's because Dr. McGucken is the one with the "patent" in the first place and the one behind the ideas. I believe the point would be that this isn't someone else supporting his ideas, this Dr. McGucken himself, which would explain why he is so vehemently set on why this is a great idea.

patents aren't cheap ... they cost thousands of dollars ... hes probably trying to get his money out ...

It explains the ranting as well ... people with doctorates are generally long winded :P ...

But in general Dr. McGucken (if thats who you really are) ...i think you fail to realize that the modding community is different than a paid organization ... we don't really follow anybody with the latest idea and the most demanding voice ... ideas are extremely cheap ... generally its the people with some actual developmental skill that we follow ...

We may be a pretty technically inclined community, but our bureaucratic heirarchy is nothing but wolfpack mentality ...

and to us you look like a small barking dog ... all bark no bite ...

Show us some models, some ingame pictures ... if you can't show us "bite" ... its very unlikely anyone here will follow you unless you pay them for it ...

I find it highly unlikely that any of the game companies that could "stand to make money" from this venture will do anything either. You can call something "the next big thing" and "a cultural renaissance" all you want, but that won't make it true. People won't accept it as that unless it becomes widely utilized in various forms of media. I would assume that's why there is a magazine, book, film, etc but I have a feeling that all this will get is a small following at the most.

I admire your adoration of classical works of literature, but not the way you intend to use them in media.

Yes ... they can ... the deal is that there are just so many fines and fees in the process, it can easily add up to thousands ...

Jul 13 2009, 2:32pm Anchor

Well, that's not good. I really feel this patent is unnecessary in the first place.
I don't think anyone would have stolen the idea.

i know they can cost up to $50,000 depending on the thing you are patenting ... Its a horrible process that involves patent lawyers, and fees and all sorts of heirarchy ...

I looked into it once when i came up with some ideas since im an mechanical engineering student ... patents are a bit like gamer acheivements for engineers ... helps engineers get jobs as well because it shows them what they have designed in the past and also that they have ingenuity and dedication ...

but i wouldn't of been able to actually file a patent without financial help from the university ... and basically if you do that they own the rights to it and pay you a percentage ...

Interesting, thanks for the information.

It sucks your university ends up owning the rights to it. I would just wait til you can afford it yourself in that case.

Yea we have to take physics and alot of other classes that don't have a immediate connection with mechanical engineering which kinda sucks ... like this summer i just took a required class that covers basic circuit design ... like RLC alternating circuits, amps, digital logic circuits, etc

Ive already taken all my physics and a bit of materials classes ...

I have yet to take some of the more complex things such as thermodynamics though ...

Well, thats the deal ... they're just too damn expensive to fill out unless you are absolutely sure its a great idea ... and if you can get the patent it still becomes hard to market it (you have to get someone to buy the rights to produce it from you ...)

Generally most engineers patent stuff under the company they are working for ... so the company owns it, but the engineer is credited for the work somehow with some sort of co-signature (not quite sure how that works ... i kinda stopped looking into it after i heard the catch for university funding :P )

Problem is, he's not ranting, he's copying text he posted earlier and on his own website and rehashing it for our enjoyment.

It is kind of sad that the people who create usually get the crappy end of the stick. And it's not just engineers and innovators either. Artists of all kinds have to turn to big money in order to have a hope of being successful themselves. I hope we see this change in the future, but for now I believe that the reality is that the system designed to protect those who create works is instead helping to fill the coffers of those who already have plenty enough money to go around. That was never the intention of the system.

lol

My point is this: anyone could do that without exerting much effort. I'm not too impressed by giant walls of pasted text.

I bet he spends no more than 10 seconds in posting. Maybe the odd few times he may actually look at one of our posts and reply with something out of context, but that's about it I guess.
