Well, here's a bit of shameless pimpage for two (out of five) mods from the David Hunter Series of mods.
If you're not familiar with this mod series, then I recommend scoping out the website and message boards at Davidhunter.game-mod.net

I'd like to propose David Hunter for best level design. Considering it has over 200 beautifully architectured arenas of an alarming variety of sizes from our fifty or so authors, it certainly deserves some regard. If you've not played it, then I'd recommend doing so just to check out all the maps. A few shots can be found in our gallery.

I've also proposed Dh4RTS (A Space RTS Mod for Generals) for anything, although best upcoming mod would be nice considering the effort out two (and only two) team members are throwing into this otherwise tricky project. This mod is a serious total conversion of an otherwise extremely limited engine. It features some extremely good modelling, and fantastic conceptuals. Just think of multiple collapsable / regenerating energy shields and awesome weaponry effects, combined with awesome and extremely well rendered (if not at least extremely animated, these things really move a LOT) scenery including static asteroid fields which are constantly shifting, ebbing and flowing gaseous clouds, planets that rotate and have weather systems, with orbiting moons - even comets which fly in and out of the system at extreme speed!

I've not bothered to propose other projects for nomination, because at this present point in time, I think that there are some other mods which should probably take serious consideration over our currently weaker projects.

I always wanted to try this, but it's such a big download that I never bothered with :(

I'll rid crap and try it soon

Yes, I heard about this mod quite some time ago (even offered to make a web site for him before I found out that he wanted PHP skills, which I sort of lack).

It's an awesome mod. Can't wait to see what you and your team does for Half-Life 2 :)

Nice to have some quick feedback ^_^

David Hunter did have the potential to get a bit dull after a while, but the next (and final) release should hopefully sort that out nicely - for example, greater emphasis on team play where the player must affiliate with a certain team which characterises certain traits, there are seven (well, soon to become six, probably) new weapons, multiple new powerups, and even MORE maps, on which can be played multiple different new game modes (some even more fucked up than you ever realised they could be) mwahahahaaaa. *cough*. That and a bit less server customisation - before it was a little over the top!

It is a big download, although it's extremely compressed, after all, 200 maps and 20 additional player models (one of which was 60 megs, lol) isn't actually a bad download for 320 megs total!

As for Half-Life 2, I might do a solo project for it sometime in the not-so-distant future - it deserves playing with at least.

On a completely unrelated note, I'll be getting the first true ingame shots of Dh4 soon - with nice cockpit shots and uber special effects that have been twiddled with for a while :). I'm quite excited about that one.

It looks really sweet. If I recall correctly, someone asked me to model for this at some point... Maybe it was you, :P. Anyway, I don't recall why I declined exactly...

Haha, well you know that the position is still open? lol.

We're still twliddling away in the more obscure background with the majority of our projects, some of which are going as slow as ever. Others are rocketing away at a hell of a pace - for example me being the only staff member working with Dh1 at present, but I'm expecting an awesome new release within the next couple of months. We only have two staff members working on Dh4RTS, but we've already got all the concepts pinned, ready and set, along with a lot of models and some really novel graphic and code work done.

Enough of that anyway. I'm still holding out for "best level design" for the original David Hunter. After all, we have released over 200 (excellent) maps in the two releases that we've made :)
