Hello, IndieDB,

My name is Henrik Larsen, and I'm a 3D Environment Artist. So, the relevance to games and the indie scene: I am self-taught in 3D with a background in classical illustration, and that as a classical pianist. For the last 6 years, I've spent learning 3D, and making large-scale environments - entirely by myself - from scratch. The programs I use are: CryEngine, UE4, 3DS Max, Maya, PhotoShop, After Effects, ZBrush, Nuke, and others as well.

This short film, which is made in CryEngine, was a project I came up with as a challenge - to make absolutely everything myself - models, textures, materials, lighting, camera work, animation, rigging, story, design and music. It was quite a task, but it was fun, and I hope I came up with something interesting.

I didn't want 'cool', and I didn't want a de-saturated look either, which is very common in sci-fi. Therefore, the goal was to be colorful, use large shapes - easy to see what is, and a mix - design wise of new and old, but all of it 'made up' from what-ever popped in my mind. Basically I went with anything I associated with 'classical sci-fi. I was also trying to get it as cinematic as I possibly could, so for that I studied cinematic lighting and camera movement.

The music I made close to the end, before putting the actual footage together, which was captured in CryEngine's Trackview. I tried to aim for something classical/synth that might fit - hopefully I did alright, and its format is a variant of a passacaglia style. I studied composition many moons ago, so it was fun being able to use what I've learned on this.

As for why I would do this project, besides the fun side of it? Well, I would like to work in the industry - at a studio, as an actual job making 3D environments, so I'm for sure looking.

And, here are some stills from Scrounger. A lot actually didn't make it into the final film, and a lot of items didn't make it either, but it was a bit of try this and that, and then cut rather brutally to fit my music. Once the music was made, which was close to the end, I knew I had to make the clip fit to that, so that was a saving grace (4 mins).

Very well done! :) I found it enjoyable to watch and intriguing.

Do you plan to make any more of these types of shorts?

Thanks very much. I am not sure where I'm going at the moment, but there could be another sort of short in the works.
