This probably sounds like the weirdest idea youve ever heard, but here goes. What if there was an RTS sandbox, simmilar to garrys mod. You have a spawn menu for different teams and different races, and can edit the level in real time by placing "props" of some sort. Anyone think this is a good idea? |

That actually sounds pretty logical to me. You don't have to wander around to get back to another part of your project and it gives you a nice bird's-eye view of the whole thing. Designing vehicles from that angle really gives perspective of the measure. In short I think the concept could fly successfully, but from what could we make it? |

Hmm... Well, it would be very inclined for NPC warring, perhaps the SC2 engine? I don't think the iron engine fits the bill... I'd go with SC2 myself. Once it comes out of course |

It's sounds intrigueing, how would you hope to stop it becoming a spamfest of creating top-end units endlessly and abusing the terrain modding tools? If you can tame the chaos it would certainly feel very different to any other RTS. You'll need to see how flexible that SC2 engine is - it looks fairly flexible, but no-one can know for sure til it's released. If it doesn't fit the bill, you're going to need to look at an open-source engine I reckon, to give you full control of the code. -- "lets say Portal is a puzzle game, so its a rehash of Tetris" |

Well, I was planning on it being more of an open sandbox to do whatever, maybe there could be gametypes or what not? |

I thought RTS by nature was a sandbox?.. Well city builders anyway I mean just look at Tropico- that entire game thrives on Sandbox. Edited by: Mr_Cyberpunk |

By Open Sandbox, I was refering to a sandbox with no goals, like in garrysmod. Stuff like Civilization and Sim city still has goals, garrysmod, (Or at least the sandbox) does not. |
