I'm working on designing an RPG surival game as realistic as possible.
I currently have these features in mind:
Realistic Weather that affects you,
diseases,
a full body for every in-game creature (organs, muscles etc( Will be able to make muscles stronger/weaker depending on training)).
island map with mountains, forests, plains etc. ,
ores to be mined (ideas on how and wich would be appreciated),
resource gathering and refining,
Diaries found in abandoned huts/mines that will be automatically updated once you discover new things (one for every proffesion/skill tree),
dynamite!,
bandits,
ageing system for everything (no idea how i'm gonna do this though),
dungeons?,
villages,
marriage,
the ability to reincarnate into one of your children (if you have them),
erosion?
custom weapons,
forging,
crafting,
skinning,
hunting,
Special ways of making weapons? (strengthened wood like the Tsurani weapons from the Raymond. E. Feist books)
And much more.

Style:
Fantasy-Medieval-Survival simulator

As I'm currently still learning C# (the language i'm planning to code it in) I don't really have anything yet.
If anyone wants to help I would greatly appreciate it!
*edit: Coding is proving to be difficult and I don't have a lot of friends who can help me on that part sadly enough.
Any suggestions are always welcome! (Has to be realistic suggestions though!)

ps, sorry for any misspelling I'm Dutch.

Seems like the aging system would be the easiest of all of those features to do.

Have a variable on every object called age, then after each day have a logic script increase the age variable by 1.
Finally have something like

if(age>90) {
Health = 10; //or other variables or physical conditions to change
}

I like the idea a realistic survival RPG (as I'm also planning to make a survival game in the future).

What kind of settings would the game have, fantasy, scifi, etc?

What I really wanted to see in this kind of a game is a living environment:

  • you can harvest plants, you can plant seed, but plants would also be able grow naturally (without you planting it)
  • weather effects plants and animal, this may seem a bit complicated but something like: if there's not much rain some plants will dry out, etc. (don't know if you mean this by "weather that affects you")
  • other characters would be also interesting, teaming up with them, maybe conflicts and building shelter/camp together

Thanks for the info! Would it be a better idea to slightly change the texture per year or per so many years?

That was exactly what I had in mind!
Didn't even think about the plants being affected but seems like a great idea.
I had an idea for villages spawning but also being able to build your own and get settlers to join your little town.
Was also gonna add a relations system and being able to marry and have kids so you can play as the kid when your character dies.

ps, I'm thinking about making a dungeon with a rift in time or/and space to a dimension that is dedicated to fantasy and the starting one being like ours.

My 93 year old grandma is in better health then most people on this site. :)

Doesn't sound like a game but more like a simulation.

If you need storylines and whatnot, hit me up. I'm useless at programming and stuff, but I'm a writer so I'm good at that. :D \m/\m/

I'd like that very much! I haven't really thought about it much but maybe there can be quests that make a lot if time pass so you don't have to wait a couple months until your character finally dies.

Very typical. Dreaming and growing ideas is easy and anyone can do it, but what takes skill in design is finding the core aspects that are essential to the idea and support pleasant gameplay experience. In other words, to make an idea feasible in any way.

The features you are describing require ridiculous amount of coding even if one is experienced. Not to mention all the graphics and GUI stuff related to it, balancing and playtesting.

If it was a multi-million commercial project with 50+ developers working on it, half the features would be scrapped before it could ever get released.

What you have is very far from lucrative idea in game developers' / funding providers' opinion.

You could kinda do this like minecraft do Alpha 0.0.1 which has beginning mobs and weather. then alpha 0.0.2 which has day and night cycle and food. and etc

Jul 20 2013 Anchor

Not really much to comment on, you haven't really fleshed out or explained what you intend to do with those ideas. Also seems to be a lot of different focus's too much unrelated content in a game is not going to make it good. I think you should narrow you idea list down to maybe 2 or 3 and focus on designing them both individually and how they will affect/connect to one another.

Jul 22 2013 Anchor

I would love to play this! And idea when you will even start making it?

What you say is true and I realise some of these goals are very difficult to accomplish.
I like brandoncaruth's idea on this.
"You could kinda do this like minecraft do Alpha 0.0.1 which has beginning mobs and weather. then alpha 0.0.2 which has day and night cycle and food. and etc"

This project will take me years and I'm hoping to acquire friends along the way who have the skills I don't posses.

To make it clear, this is merely an idea that might grow (or not).

Thank you all for your opinion's and criticism.

You could try the games that are already out there... There's Cataclysm and NeoScavenger and SurviveRL and I'm sure many more...
