Why do british people refer to "cigarettes" as "fags" I don't really get it because a fag is "a bundle of sticks" ... so what the hell is fags? ... several packs of cigarettes? Maybe the definition got distorted somewhere (i don't even know the origin of the word) -- My links:|Xfire|Mars Wars 3|Steam|

There's nothing to "get" about most slang, it just is what it is. The same as referring to a homosexual as a faggot doesn't make sense either. Edited by: Minuit |

Now, I must agree with you on that. The alarm went off. Shouldn't be, the alarm went on?! Throw in incorrect misuse of words too. Edited by: Nelsoncarmo26 |

Maybe the definition got distorted somewhere (i don't even know the origin of the word) lol... It's like Americans use words like "Bad", "Wicked" and "Sick" when something is Awesome, Cool or whatever! So basically, you have to check your own use of words before you judge how we Irish and Brits use ours! Muwhahaha! |

I'm portuguese, and they use words in the wrong context too, so don't be offended. For instants, they call cinical to someone who tries to do you harm discreetly, and call paranoid to someone who just can't take jokes. I used to get really annoyed with my mother for calling me paranoid when I was in a bad mood, and wasn't in the mood for jokes. So there you go. Edited by: Nelsoncarmo26 |

It was just a comment. For instants, they call cinical to someone who tries to do you harm discreetly, and call paranoid to someone who just can't take jokes. I used to get really annoyed with my mother for calling me paranoid when I was in a bad mood, and wasn't in the mood for jokes. So there you go.
