recommended format of uploaded videos? (Forums : Support : recommended format of uploaded videos?) Post Reply

What are Moddb's recommendations for the format/framerate/codec of uploaded videos? My new video is horribly pixelated - the original upload was crystal-clear 60fps/5000kbps+/130mb xvid, but none of this shows in the final converted product.

In what format should I upload the video to maximise the quality of the Moddb conversion?

many thanks

Looks ok to me the start is a bit weird but it smooths out. I belive .mp4 is what is used mostly we convert into again i believe the h264 codec.

Yes, xvid is an mp4 codec, and that's what I used, but I'm just curious about the difference between this: Moddb.com  which looks as though it hasn't been re-compressed at all, and the video I uploaded, which clearly has. I was wondering if there was some format/codec/setting that was used for the original of that video which allowed it to slip through the recompression stage so beautifully.

You will  have to wait for our inhouse video wizz to answer that then, HENLEY!!

Yes, I would love to hear how Henley did it. I've re-uploaded my video ( Moddb.com ). It's now 178mb Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 640x480 60.00fps 7346Kbps [Video 0] / Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 44100Hz stereo 128Kbps [Audio 1 ], and this seems to look much better. One thing that seemed to help was to go for a constant bitrate in a single pass rather than letting the encoder decide the bitrate based on the action (for game footage, more bits during action looks better than less, as is the usual default for most encoders). But still, there is clearly much more to it than just this.

First off there is no point in making it 60fps when our system can only show 30fps (the same goes for the human eye as well FYI), I cant look at the video right now as I am stuck on dialup (Aussie internet, what can ya do?) but what I suggest you do is lower the FPS to 29.97 make the render at a CBR (constant bitrate) instead of variable bitrate (simply put the bitrate will always be the same and wont differ), set your audio to AAC which is MP3 it will reduce the size but keep the quality anything over 48kHz is overkill. For my video codec I use H.264 MainConcept which is perfect for high quality internet streaming video, infact that is what our video and many other video systems re-process the uploads too, if you keep these settings I can guarantee that it will work well, but only if you render from the original files DON'T re-render an already finished product that just will make it look worse.

Hopefully that will help.

Thank you very much Henley. So to summarise:

-every video uploaded to Moddb is re-processed to 29.97 fps and compressed using H.264 MainConcept
-if you start with a video already processed in this way, the re-process will have less impact on the final product.

Unfortunately, MainConcept is a very pricey option. Would it not be better for modders if x264 were used on Moddb rather than MainConcept?

Grrr, people who think we can't see anything above 30 FPS make me angry! Have you never played a game at 30FPS then switched to another at 60, Henley?

games are different to videos because you have a direct input into the game and expect a result in a timely matter thus fps matters. How ever in a video this is not the case.

If people have been using the OGG Vorbis suite of codecs, this has been re-enabled for use in uploads.

It would be really useful if someone could post the resolutions, audio and video codecs and framerates used by the moddb reprocessor, along with the recommended inputs of the same for best results. Perhaps such a thing exists and I've missed it?

It is what ever you upload it to be, it does not magically make it larger then it should be. I have also posted the recommended settings for the best rendering solution above. It is what we use for all our official videos.
