Thermite is awesome, because you can make it out of simple household objects. |

... and those objects would be? Easiest is aluminium powder and simple iron rust. But there are 56 ways of making it. Caution though: thermite burns extremely hot. Thus it's extremely dangerous. I suggest you are extremely careful with it or don't mess with it at all. It burns through clay bricks within seconds. Edited by: Whizzard |

i kinda knew that ... but ... is aluminum powder and rust considered household objects? and 56 ways to make it? ... wtf ... are you saying, 56 different types of re-dox reactions similar to Al + FeO => AlO + Fe, or 56 actual ways to combine aluminum powder and rust? Edited by: Assaultman67 |

Not really "Household" no, (Well, unless you wanna mash your windows and patio doors! lol) but it's easy to assume that both Aluminum and Iron rust are very very easy to come by without spending a penny/cent! Tbh, a while ago after watching an episode of Mythbusters (Where they attempted to explain the Hindenburg Disaster) and saw how they made their own Thermite to coat a miniture Zeppelin, I was really really tempted to have a go! However, I've never had much luck with those sorta things and decided against it for fear of my own well being! lol. EDIT: Image of the Mythbusters' miniature Hindenburg Thermite-ing away! Here's a Vid of the M'Busters 3rd attempt... Tis pretty cool indeed! lol (Unfortunately "Embedding" is disabled for this particular Vid! Edited by: Orion |

Did they really use termine? I thought they just tested a paint which had been easily flammable. |

They coated the miniature-Hindenburg with thermite paint mixture. They had multiple of these miniatures and used different techniques for each of them (ie. one was coated purely with thermite, another was coated in thermite and some other mixture [forgot which one that was, unfortunately; the one they used on the actual Hindenberg] in a patterned coat [ie. coat A, coat B, coat A, coat B, etc.]). Hm.. come to think of it, I think they also did test a flammable paint. My memory is a bit foggy, since I haven't seen the episode in a while. Guess you could search for it on youtube. |

Yea... it was a Thermite based paint that they made especially for the experiment. Apparently the "Paint" for the experiment was made to the same specs as was done for the Hindenburg. Unfortunately way back in the day, when the Hindenburg was built, they had no idea of how flammable their coating actually was (They didn't know of what made Thermite back then)... Hence the disaster! Tbh, you'd have to watch the entire episode to get all the facts and details of the miniature reconstruction and how close to the real McCoy they tried to make it... Including the hydrogen used to inflate the blimp etc. etc... Basically, they concluded that the disaster was due to a combination of the Thermite coating and the Hydrogen. However, if it wasn't for the Thermite coating, which accelerated the process 10 fold, things wouldn't have been as disastrous as it actually turned out back in the day. Some people may have actually survived! Edited by: Orion |

I thought it was the fact that the thing burned so fast is what saved people from dying ... it basically was a flash burn ... which prevented many people from being roasted to death or catch on fire themselfves Edited by: Assaultman67 |

Sorry... My mistake about the survivor/death count! I don't know too much about the history of the Hindenburg tbh, I'm just interested in the MB experiment, thermite etc etc. lol But yea... it makes sense that the quick-burn could have actually saved some lives! Good Point! |

Aluminium is everywhere, also rust. Use knife to gather rust from metals and find useless bit of aluminium and use file to turn it into powder. Some metals burn pretty well in powder form, this starts reaction with oxyde (rust) and result is lots of heat. And wiki says you can use any combination of metals and oxydes that are listed there. Thus 56 ways. Edited by: Whizzard |
