Next week we'll begin beta testing the new Valve Anti-Cheat system. For people playing multiplayer games, there will not be any visible difference while we're conducting the beta, but we will be logging cheating violations into our database to make sure it's ready for general release. This will be the last public notice before the system is released and active for everyone.

If you have any cheats for multiplayer games installed on your computer, now would be a good time to uninstall and stop using them. When a cheat infraction is detected, the offender will be permanently banned from playing on secure servers.

I really hope that this time it is going to make a difference!

Well, I certainly have a friend that this is going to annoy. Reguardless, hacking is still hard to completely rule out, but at least they're fighting it. The ONLY thing that scares me about this is being falsely accused. I've heard my share of horror stories of people being wrongly banned, and Valve did nothing to help them.

Yeah I heard about this from one of my clan leaders. Good news for me. :D

My account was disabled wrongly, something about hijacking accounts... but the people at Steam were very nice, and re-instated my account after I sent them pictures of my box and cd keys :)

luckily i have never had this problem. But i think the new system is more precise than old ones and will have better filters, so there will be very few "casualties".

Heh, I have a funny story. Remember the period of time when people were getting their keys stolen by keygens? I was a victim. After the Steam beta was finished and you were required to enter a key, I entered mine and it returned that it was already registered... Someone registered my key almost immediately after Steam's beta ended. This was confirmed after talking with Valve, but they didn't disable that account nor gave it to me because I didn't have the necessary proof anymore. I lost that stuff years ago. Fortunately, I had upgraded my ATI graphics card and got a new account, but man that was annoying.

hehe... VAC is kack... if they ever manage to get one h4x3r which is not a NoOp i shit my pants laughing. joking aside, you don't really think that VAC^2 will change anything don't you? i mean locking down innocent people but leaving h4x3r5 roaming around untouched doesn't really proof your system beeing any good *grin*

they actually did alot of rewriting, and ive read up that, if the system catched a person hacking in any server, it will automatically ban them from all vac secure servers(as it so states)...so I think it will work, the only problem I could forsee, is people getting banned from having modified sprays or weapon skins that sometimes report out as a hack, when it really wasn't. But I seriously think vac2 will change alot of things...

Well I was mad, because I didn't want to switch to Steam in the first place.

Hybrid - I'm lead to believe that mods will have access to some way of using it, yes, but don't quote me on that.

I'm pretty certain it will. I think VAC just checks for certain files and/or activity that shouldn't be used/happening, but I'm not entirely sure either. I'd assume mods would at least have SOME kind of access.

Really? I usually use ply and my characters are healed or something really weird happens. Yeah, I know, shitty Golden Sun reference, so shoot me.

I stopped playing HL2 multiplayer until this VAC2 comes out. I just can't be bothered to record demos and find an admin etc etc, a big waste of time. So, hurray VALVe! :)

what separates cheats from in-game mods? I know some clans use things like low-gravity or special sights when they're playing friendly games. DO those count as cheats?
