I have worked for a game company before, but I was just the sound dude. Music and sound effects. While it was amazing to still be part of the team, I really wanted to get in the design part of the team. So here I am, on my own now. I have gone through countless tutorials with blender, gimp, unity, c++, java, and a handful of others. I'm not looking to jump right into creating some well polished 3d rpg. I have an idea in mind for a simple 2d game that is kind of like braid, or maple story as far as graphics and character control. I want my character to be able to level up, inventory, whole 9 yards. I have already designed my characters, finished the story. All the details I want are there.

What I really need is just some suggestions on what engine I should use, and programs for graphics, programming, and whatever else I will need to create my game. I want cutscenes, menus, interactive npc's. I'm not looking for something that promises me the ability to make games fast. I want to take my time, get my feet wet, start understanding everything it takes to put together a decent game.

honestly, you're seeing too big for a first project. if there's one thing I've learned so far, it is that you will fail if you try to make a complete game at your first attempts
remove the inventory, cutscenes, interactive npc's, etc. hell, even remove the story !
try to make the simplest thing possible and then expand it

programming is a hell of a job so you will want to go simple on that

personally I recommend unity for game development, as it is very easy to use and understand
if you are looking into making a 2d game, either find someone for your art (there is usually many artists on the forums looking for projects) or do the art yourself
