I am a game development student, and I just started a group for developing a portfolio quality game. I am curious about any advice anyone can give about managing people and their productivity. I know that's pretty much a necessity to have a group, but I am new. Basically how do you push people do work harder, look further for their answers, and increase independence within themselves? Just looking for a little insight. A resource is welcomed as well. I am not lazy, I have been doing homework on this, but why not ask a pro's opinion? :D

I'm no pro on management, but I firmly belive that being genuinely interested in the individuals of your team, and be open for feedback and ideas about the project. Listen to them, get to know them, be positive, but honest. That I think is the best way to go if you want independence and creativity. I mean, there are alot of books out there on how to manipulate people and plant ideas in their heads and so on. But I don't think thats a smart way to go.

Thank you for your advice. :) I agree that is a good way to manage. I want it to be a fun group mainly, but I worry about people not making it a priority. I guess I'll have to wait to see.

Sharing your enthusiasm and letting them be a part of making the decisions should do the trick. But I think you should be careful about who you invite to the project aswell. Some people are just unmotivated. Me myself, I get super enthusiastic at first, but in a month or two, I could'nt care less, it's not that I don't want to, it's just a problem.
What I'm trying to say is, you can't do more than you can do.

Good point! I didn't think of that perspective. You can't make someone do something that they are not driven to do. :) Thank you.
