Hey ModDB'ers. I am creating new material for my demo reel. I have modeled the Starscream Transformer from a toy that I picked up at the store. The model is not completed, so please keep that in mind when you make your critiques and comments. I am mainly posting this to get opinions about the transformation animation.

wow, that must have been complicated to do, great work ;)
About the animation, it is good if you want it to be explaining how it transforms itself, if you want to do an animation for a game i suggest you to make it faster. With a fastest animation people may find it hard to understand the transformation so you may have to transform it piece by piece, like first the legs and the arms and then the head part.

Good job again :D

Yeah, I purposely transformed him slowly so that all the parts would be seen. As far as complicated, it just took a little while because it is all just set driven keys. When I create the final animation it will be a lot quicker. The animation isn't for a game; it is just for my personal demo reel. I tried to mimic the transformations from the Transformer movie. I liked how they were so fluid in the transformation and it was all one motion, not piece by piece. I appreciate the critique.

I thought this looks good, because it doesn't look like in the movie. In the movie you'd see a lot of things occuring during the transformation that weren't really that clear on how and were a part went. It looked a bit forged to me in the cinema. However with your animation, stemming from a toy, all parts make sense, even though it doesn't look nearly as complcated a transformation as in the film.

The pure animation won't be very impressive to developers, but if you make it a scene, e.g. Starscream flying towards a base through laser and missile fire, transforming there and taking a blast - then you are telling a story with the transformation. Story is the most important element as to why something is happening. The technical skills are something most people can learn, but everyone implements them differently.

SinKing. My plan is to composite the character on video of my desk and have the "toy" come to life. I was going to have him walk around then tranform and fly off into the other room. I am by no means finished with the detail of the model, but I am pretty set on how the tranformation animation is going to go. Thanks for the comment.

Nice one :)
I'll be looking forward to see your finished scene.

In the movies they had more details, but this is from a toy so it fits. I agree that it might be a bit faster, but it is cool to see how peaces fit.
Keep it up :)

Hanzie, I will be adding more detail. But the detail will be to make it look more like a toy. It will look like a plastic figure on the desk and then just come to life. The transformation will be a lot faster, I mearly did a quick test animation to get critiques about how it looked. It will flow a lot better when it is in the final.

I just came up with another story for the transformation. If you transform from Jet to Robot he could start gasping for air and bend over to cough up some spare parts, which would rattle onto the ground.
I somehow think that'd be quite funny and become kind of a signature move for your work on Starscream.
