My idea for a megaman style mod, a detailed description | Locked | |

{edited to generate interest} I want to make a mod with the gameplay of a megaman game, with an original look. That way, not only would I get to be more creative in designing the characters (I'm a Yes, people have tried to make megaman mods before, but they take the look of the games and apply them to standard FPS gameplay. I say stick with what makes things work. The gameplay would be 2d and the graphics would be 3d. Saying how simple a sidescroller is, it could be for any engine, though I'm heavily leaning towards Unreal Tournament 2003. Theme: Though I love the megaman games for the gameplay, I hate the look. I'm a big fan of more mechanical looking robots. So while this mod would play like a megaman game, it would have a mix between a cartoony and industrial look. Can't picture what I'm picturing? Most of my ideas for the characters were inspired by a game called Metal Arms. (http://www.metalarms.com) There are two reasons I don't want to use Capcom's characters. Number one: I want to avoid a cease and desist. Number two: I want to be creative in designing this. Gameplay: It would be a side-scroller. You move left and right, you jump, you duck, and all that stuff. The keyboard would do the moving and the mouse would do the shooting. You would aim your weapon with the mouse, just like in Soldat or Abuse. Everyone has an arm cannon which you would be able to charge up to fire a more powerful shot. The projectiles fired would not be hitscan, and they would fade away after a set distance. Every player would have 'stunts' for lack of a better word. Every player could double jump. Holding down and pressing jump would make you slide. Jumping at a wall will bounce you off of it. Remember in Megaman how if you killed a boss you would steal thier power? That would be in too. Before the game starts, you pick a power. There would be a long list of choices: weapons that shoot fire, weapons that shoot ice, missiles, traps, etc etc. What's really important is that when you kill another player, you steal thier power. This would be the only way to get more weapons. The stronger a power, the less shots it would have. When a player takes damage, they would get knocked back and would start to flash. When flashing, you're immune to damage. This was a gameplay mechanic in the megaman games to prevent you from getting killed in two seconds. In this mod, it would serve the same purpose. Nothing sucks more than dying the second you see somebody. When you take too much damage, you die. You'd respawn of course, but you would only have a limited amount of lives. When you're out of lives, you spectate. When one play is left, that guy wins. The one thing that I hate about round based games is when only two players are left and they're camping on other sides of the map. My idea is a variation of sudden death. When there are only two players left in the game, a timer will start to count down. When it reaches zero, every spectator would respawn with unlimited lives. Thier new goal? Kill the last two players. The last man standing wins, and then the map changes. And of course, there would be powerups scattered around the level for refilling health and energy. Simple stuff, but a game doesn't need to be complex to be fun. Anyways, I'm a modeller. I won't say I'm an uber-modeller, but I am above-average. Talk to me sometime, I'll show you what I have. I can also mesh and animate, but I can't skin, code or map to save my life. - Edited By Rambler On Mon 15th, Dec 2003 @ 12:19:23pm |

Buttah, what engine? Quake1 is definitely possible with this since Soldat was made. -- < insert subject games here >

I just realized how painfully boring that first post must have been to read. I just edited it to make it shorter, and more to the point. Enjoy. |

CAPCOM will let you, by the way. I got the aok for making Gargoyle's Quest III, and other Megaman and Resident Evil mods must've got the aok also. Just don't harm them or third party organizations and don't make any revenue. There IS a side-scroller mutuator for UT2k3 out there somewhere as well as UT (Is it SMASH UT?)... I might get out there and find it someday. - Edited By CheapAlert On Mon 15th, Dec 2003 @ 12:30:44pm -- < insert subject games here >

Hmmm... so, capcom = friends? That's odd. Anyway, I really want to do a Megaman Mod someday... as it's my favourite game since I was 6. The concept is done, just have to learn how to model (or get a moddeler), find a suitable engine and learn how to code properly (oh, dammit)... -- modDB's official UT whore |

Half-Life can't be a sidescroller, i've tried. The only sidescroller it can get is a flash game "hl-2d" I know Quake has plenty. Target Quake, 2DCam, GQ3, Target Quake3, Soldat, etc... - Edited By CheapAlert On Mon 15th, Dec 2003 @ 12:50:17pm |

Yeah... it'd be a good idea, but I still have to finish my Apocalypse Weapons before starting another project... -- modDB's official UT whore |

Of course Darkness, no rush. Now if only I could find a mapper and skinner interested in this... |

Here I go with my patronizing again Quake1! IMAGINE TEH POSSIBLITEIS UT can work with 2d cams too, Klingon Honor Guard has a bunch of built in camera modes (even top down) so Unreal engine MAY be most flexible for having "different" camera views. - Edited By CheapAlert On Tue 16th, Dec 2003 @ 8:29:38pm |

Somebody had that idea, and is making a side-scrolling Half-Life game. It doesn't use the Half-Life engine though, but is looking good. It's called Codename: Gordon, and is a take on Half-Life 2. I don't remember what the developers are using to program it though. And I agree, Quake or UT or something like would be easy to use. --

Like i've said before, HL-2D is done in Flash, not Half-Life. - Edited By CheapAlert On Thu 18th, Dec 2003 @ 10:54:50am |

@ Spacer, I tried to say that, but hey, my connection was dodgy. Half-Life can be turned into a side scroller with a little bit of effort (but not very much ]actually) - Edited By ambershee On Thu 18th, Dec 2003 @ 3:17:48pm |

Finally, some concept sketeches! I know I won't be taken seriously until I actually model everything I can, but it's a start.
That last one is gigantic, though probably the most descriptive. |

Quake 1 is old. Quake 1 is ugly. Quake 1 has a very limited format for models (vertex animations are ugly). Half-Life is based on Quake 1. A little better but still not what I want. Why would this mod need to be for some ancient engine just because it would be a sidescroller? |

Yay for tenebrae. Let's make a mod inaccessable to everyone except those with geforce 4 video cards. Forget it. I'll find help elsewhere. |
