I was wondering if it could be possible to introduce a ranking system here.
Something similar as the system on IMDB.

An overview of the best 50-100-whatever mods in their categories based on their rankings.
Makes it easier to search for good Mods in whatever style as well.

You can already rate Mods, I know, but I feel like there could be more than just that.

(If there is already something like this here... kick me)

I think that's the point. However, IXI, I think that many of the top mods in the community are either going to be mentioned so much in the forums you're going to know about them, or there are going to be features written about them. I recommend checking back through the features listing; there are some kick-arse mods in there.

Yeah, you're probably right.
But, for someone who's just checking ModDB now and then, not an actual member,
an overview of the Mods worth checking out could be nice.

But that's just my idea, since the system works so well on IMDB.

I just think that having a list of mods "worth playing" would imply that those not listed aren't worth playing, which could cause definite offense. I believe that mods are easily searchable with a bunch of advanced features anyway, so they are fairly accessible, and with all the comments everywhere on the mod profile, people can learn if it's the sort of mod they want.

I'd tend to agree with meth on this one.

I can imagine a truckload of brainwashed dbz fans upvoting piss poor dbz mods to be at the top of the list...

Yeah not exactly voting but, as I said, an overview of the Mods based on their rating: 8/10 etc.

Well, as nice as that sounds, it'd still be influenced by noobs to the site. Say, you'd have a flood of people giving every score 10/10 to get it up there (maybe someone leading the mod would drag people over to do that).

I suggest that on a game's profile, they could give the Top 10 mods due to the user rating. Perhaps that would be safer than listing 50-100 of them. ;)

Nope. I'd say that if only ten get listed, it would increase the pressure to game the statistics. If you we're listed as number 11 then you'd be fairly happy with that, and prefer to spend your time polishing the mod to indirectly climb the table. However, if you aren't on the table at all, but suspect you are close, you'll use every trick in the book to get yourself on there.

As will everyone else, making the whole thing a farce. Gaming the stats will always be a problem, but the less places there are available, the more desperate the underhand tactics get :(

What about introducing a standardised rating system for those who write features about mods. That would eliminate the underhand tactics. I think reviewers give marks out of 10 anyway, but they never get officially associated with the mod.
This way they could be evaluated by the reviewer, and that rating (say points out of 10) could be listed as another variable to search when you are looking for mods. You could filter by rating, or whatever. The rating can be listed on the mod profile page too.

Obviously it would be quite a recognition just to have a 'Feature Rating', because of course only the better mods get featured.

We aren't doing a rating system with the reviews anymore. Now it is a Pro's and Con's system, allowing people to make their own judgements. The score is just an arbitrary and pointless number, anyway.
