I would like to begin by noting that I have read the other thread that brushed on this topic, and I found it particularly relevant. However, it was indirect, in the wrong place, and didn't really suggest anything.

Essentially, I would like to see a system implemented where mod teams are allowed to give their mods a rating according to their view on the maturity content of that mod. I've been mulling this idea over for a while, and if my memory serves me correctly, Cheapalert mentioned that him and INtense had discussed the matter.

Well, today, I loaded up the new beta of Hidden: Source, to find that it now had a big red circle with something along the lines of: "18+ Excessive Gore" written under it. This is a step in the right direction, and it would be nice for Moddb to allow mod teams to put disclaimers like this on their mod profile, which links to a definition of what is meant by different ratings. Also providing a small link image that also links to the definition of the rating that mod teams can put on their web pages as well would be fantastic.

With all the scandal around Hot Coffee and what have you, I feel it's important for the modding community to show various public figures that we are ready to acknowledge (and urge them to acknowledge) the difference between user made content and the orignal game.

I also had something cool to say, but I'm afraid that's lost itself in the void. Alas.XD

So it'd be kind of like an

  • EC
  • E
  • E10
  • T
  • M
  • AO

  • ESRB mod kinda thing?

Yeah, except I was thihnking more like:
    Everyone
    Teen
    Mature (15+)
    Adults Only.

In addition to that, I think a system with plusses and subtractions would be cool, so a mod has its rating, and if it feel the need, one or two plus signs or minus signs. A plus sign would indicate that it is slightly more profane than its rating would indicate, two plus signs would indicate it is a fair bit more profane that its rating. Minus signs would obviously be the negative.

    Just a suggestion.

While this could be a good idea to have ratings for mods, its rather pointless when you think about it. Unless you have parents that stand behind you watching your every move on the internet, people are just going to download whatever anyhow.

True, but I think meth has a valid point in bringing it up. What about users who themselves want to avoid a certain type of content. It is rare, but not altogether unheard of.

That makes since, perhaps allowing for those people to feel more in tune to the site, and cover the angles for all users who visit the site.

Also, it's the same with pornographical content on teh intarwebs. To stop their children accessing it, parents still have to stand over their kids shoulders and literally watch what they are looking it. I'm sure many children have to ask before downloading large files, and parents may look and see a big fat "AO" on the downloads page, which would generally deter some parents from allowing their children to download that particular mod.

Mainly though, I see it as a symbolic gesture, because I'm sick of the public blaming game developers for user modified and created content.

EDIT: OMFG!1 Only staff have replied to this at time of modification of this post.

It's because we all silently agree. I don't think we need the finger being pointed at us any longer. We need to start covering our arses a bit. I'm all for the implementing of a mod rating system. My vote is on Methulah's system :P

There are no more original ideas. You just have to hope your ripoff is better than everyone elses.
