If you haven't already heard about, which I'm sure you HAVE!, read the news article above. Basically, to sum it up:

- Microsoft used illegal methods to advertise their product
- Microsoft got more publicity using this method then any other method (as it is ALL over the news)
- Microsoft received a summons for $50! That's it...$50!

Now that is just a quick summury, but I believe they should be punished for this type of illegal behaviour much more, especially when they are one of the richest companies that exist in the whole world and have Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, working for them. This isn't the first time either! If you remember, they used the EXACT same type of illegal advertising with the XBOX. I can't exactly remember if it was done in the US, but certainly in Australia. They had to remove it all, but did they care? NO! Why not? Well, cos they got so much indirect publicity from it, which they didn't have to pay for, that almost everyone in Australia (and overseas) knew about it, just by reading the news.

I think it's an absolute disgrace! Mark my words, they'll do this again. They are competing with AOL and their new Instant Messenger, but honestly, who is talking about AOL's product now? NO ONE! They are all reading about and discussing Microsofts illegal advertising for MSN 8, which basically advertises the product to all these people.

The city of New York has accepted their apology and is happy for Microsoft to pay for the cleanup bill and that's that. It's absolute rubbish! The CEO's at Microsoft are probably all sitting back in their expensive offices all sitting around and laughing at how easily they got away with all of this.

Can anyone else understand me or no? Is it just me who things Microsoft basically got away with murder (in technological terms)? What are your thoughts?

DOWN WITH MICROSOFT!!!!!

You're right, the news article is just like an advertisement in itself, ... I would not be surprised if Microsoft painted the decals to advertise, knew it was illegal, so there would be news about it: more advertising for them! Cheapskates!

Hehe. Is Mac really that good? I'm hoping to get an Apple iBook shortly...fingers crossed!! I've had Microsoft all my life, so I wouldn't know about Mac. Had Linux for a bit, but would still like to try Apple products...they look so nice...graphics...hardware...

*me drools...

:)

Do you use a Mac or ever used one recently? What are your thoughts?

I was talking to INtense! about it, he didn't even want to talk about Apple's! I tried to convince him, but he wouldn't have it...damn bastard!! He has been warped by Bill Gates and his MSN bullcrap...warped I tells ya!! Hopefully I'll have that boy converted to the better, crash-proof, user-friendly, appealing Mac!!

Let's dish out some opinions and facts!

If you seriously do reckon Mac sux harder then MS, why? What is your opinion based on? Do you even have any experience to have an opinion on this matter in the first place?

mac's dont crash nearly as much, but arent as compatable, not as much software is made for them.

they are faster though, and look much better.
its all personal appeal.

I used a mac years ago, so my opinions old, but they sucked due to slowness, crappyness and lack of stuff...

As for mac's not crashing as much as windows: BS - Windows XP hasnt crashed on me once, I've had it installed for 1year almost.

As for mac nowerdays; I dunno if they still suck tbh, but ive been burnt in the past and my opinion on mac wont change.

I don't use MSN I use Trillian so that does not make me a MSN puppet :D

As for Windows, well honestly why anything else?

Sure looks are grand but I value functionality. Apples are designed with simplicty and ease of use in mind. This means they lack many advanced features which would only confuse there users. Therefore my thinking is that by using an apple you are basically only restricting yourself (since you ARE a compent PC user) and the only benefit is a nice interface...

If you haven't used a Mac recently, I'm sure you'll say it's not compatible and all that nonsense, but I think they have gone a long way since those primary school days where there was really NO compatibility with them and PC's. Nowadays, with all these standards and protocols, everything is basically compatible. I mean they got Microsoft Office for Mac's for crying out loud.

Anywho, I dunno if I'll get it, but if I'll do, I'll provide you with my thoughts on what I think about it.

Cheers,
Greg

im of the opinion that the new macs are a lot better than the old ones, but
A) theyre not as fast a pcs, and go out of date a lot faster
B)theyre a LOT more expensive
if u look at basically the same components between macs and pcs, the mac is more expensive (this was based on 3 month old stuff, so if its changed, prove me wrong :P)

It depends what tests you do. I've read many articles stating that the speed of the high-end Mac's versus the speed of the high-end PC's are basically even. If you perform one benchmark, the PC will be quicker, whilst performing a different benchmark, the Apple will the faster. Basically, they are so fast now that speed is not an issue, both types of computers are FRIGGEN fast!!

PsychoFarmer wrote:

In my case this isn't an issue as it is an offer thru the government where I pay a small value per fortnight. The cost is the same whether I choose an Apple or Acer, so yeah, I figured I'd go for the Apple...

:)

Plus, look at it!! ...it's sexy...nice white laptop and smooth keys...oooh yeah...

I haven't even seen any Macs made newer than about 1998...I have an old one in my room for the everyday things like homework and other word processing n stuff. My grandma has one of the original iMacs, which were definitely extremely cheap, but otherwise run of the mill. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Now what gets my goat is when people say Macs aren't half as fast as PCs because they got to 1Ghz by the time PCs were almost at 2. This is wrong, as their Hertzes are measured differently and current macs are definitely just as fast (give or take some) as the current PCs. I believe there's an article about this somewhere that I read a month or two ago.

SeienAbunae's wrote: Me had win xp for 1 year, never crashed.

Well, that could only happen if you only use your Win XP computer for things like writing letters and drawing flowers. Because if you used it for anything usual, like playing games and coding, it would be crashing a few times a week. From my personal experiences, Win XP crashes just as much as older windows version, except those crashes rarely actually crash the whole computer. Whereas Macs...well lets say I've never seen anything newer than MacOS 8.x, which is very stable and rarely crashes (though I don't do much on it)...and this new MacOS X, it is supposedly the most stable operating system around, despite its horrible smooth bubbly look (which was stolen by MS for WinXP). And my favourite Windows OS is Win 98, because it is what I've used the much, and Win XP sucks. Win XP seems to have been made for stupid people (you know, the people that actually BUY games and such), therefore has about half the customizability of previous version like Win98.

And here's a little real life experience: I have my Windows computer, and I just got ADSL. So its all plugged in and stuff, then I plug it in the back of the computer and proceed to spend half an hour fiddling with it to get it to run properly. Whereas with my 10 year old mac, I simply plug the dsl cable into the computer and check one little check box (something about TCP/IP i believe) and voila, everything runs fine.

Now you may be wondering why I don't bloody chuck out my Windows stuff and buy brand new Macs, since I seem to hate windows and love macs. I'll never do that because all of the things I love were built for Windows. If I used macs, I would never be able to program the easiness and simplicity that is DOS, I could have never modded Quake, or any game for that matter, I probably wouldn't even know how to code anything except for HTML (though I might've learned PHP if I used a Mac :))

You'll noticed I've left something huge out of my rant: Linux. The thing is, I've never used it, though I've only heard good things about it. I don't know what it can do, how compatible it is with Windows programs, etc. (Tell me more!)

And I hope liquid can fill us in on how good the newer Mac OSes and apple computers are...

Well, I'm glad someone else sees past the MHz myth and knows the truth...that Macs are just as fast as PC's!!

As for me getting an Apple iBook...it ain't gonna happen. :(

Well, not for about four months or something like that. It's something to do with my mums contract as a teacher, she hasn't signed for a year or more, so she ain't able to get one. I think she'll sign on early next year, but that's not for certain.

As for Linux, I rate it. I've used Red Hat Linux and Mandrake Linux. I'd have to say I prefer Mandrake. It's much more simpler and the GUI is much better. I'm no whiz at it, I suck bigtime to tell you the truth. But if you are willing to learn it, it sure is a very powerful OS.

Apparently SuSE 8.1 has now caught upto Windows in terms of 'ease of installation'. This is from The Register:

The wrote:
Anyone wondering why MS execs Steve Ballmer and Brian Valentine are so bent out of shape about Linux should check out SuSE's most recent distro, 8.1, for insight. For a desktop PC or small-biz network it's already miles ahead of Win98-SE and ME and closing fast on XP for ease of installation and use by first-timers.

I really want to use linux, but I just don't have a spare PC which absolutly sucks. Mind you maybe I should just install it on my reserve Harddrive, and swap whenever I want to get it a run.

It would only be for playing, mind you some of the code functionalities the modDB depends on from Apache only work on a linux box and not on a win32 machine so it could prove worthwhile and handy. I guess I shall tried it one of these days.
