I've an idea for a mod based on human pharmacology and physiology that should be fun but will teach.

It's based on the idea of drug actions on the human body.

The idea is this:
Instead of bullets and lasers you fire drugged darts or area effect gases.

The catch is the drugs take a while to kill you and use of antidotes will nullify the effects.

So - scenarios:
1. I dart you with atropine (an anti-muscarinic poison found in deadly nightshade) - it increases your heart rate putting you at risk of a cardiac arrest, and blurs your vision messing up the screen for you. You need to administer propanolol (a beta-blocker) to counteact the cardiac effects and and pilocarpine (a muscarinic) to counter the visual effects.

2. I dart you with atracurium (a muscle relaxant) - this slows you down and in time will paralyse you and kill you (you can't breathe if paralysed). You have to use anticholinesterase to increase the amount of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction (the normal, native neurotransmitter) and counter the effect of the atracurium. If I'd darted you with suxemethonium (another muscle relaxant)this method would not work as it cannot be reversed with antichoinesterases and would actually make things worse.

3. I give myself amphetamine to increase my speed - you realise I am moving faster and so hit me with more, I go into cardiac arrest from stimulant overdose. Or you use alpha and beta blockers to counteract it.

You would have to titrate the amount of drug you use to counter attacks as it is, of course, possible to overdose yourself. You could also load yourself in anticipation, eg with noradrenaline if you suspected I was going to use propanolol to slow your heart to a standstill.

Obviously it would not be realistic but it would use the theoretical concepts behind drug and neurotransmitter action in the autonomic (and even central!) nervous system.

It could be a FPS, or you could only have the drugs to manipulate with your opponent wired up to the administration machine (as you would be) in front of you. No health - death from the drugs or not. Feedback would be heart, blood pressure and respiratory monitors.

I wonder, are there any other medical students (like me) who play games and would be interested in making a mod. Even if you aren't it's still a good idea imho. Could syndicate it to med schools where they would have competitions. Unis all have perfect LAN set-ups already :p

Actually, that sounds pretty interesting. Games are helping doctors right now (particularly surgeons) with the teachings of hand-eye coordination, so maybe your mod will cater better to the aspiring doctors so they learn more about chemicals :)

I was thinking that as you start you are given a random illness or genetic condition based on real population statistics and whether you are male or female.

Then you'd have a disadvantage/advantage depending on the issue. Eg - if asthmatic beta-blockers will be v bad for you so you will have to take care when countering an adrenaline attack, if you make psuedocholinesterases suxamethonium with have a much longer effect on you.

Of course your opponent would not know what you have.

Screw Source, Hl2 doesn't even have an sdk out. UT2004 would be good for this.This is actually one of the few good ideas out there, I like it.

I forgot to mention - there is no health.

You live or die depending on the state of you organs. If drugs induce a fatal heart attack you die, if drugs cause you to suffocate you die, if your brain shuts down you die.

All MP mods are about "messing up" the other guy anyway. This way you learn as well as do that.
