I get so excited when I read about the mods in the making, just to be dissapointed because of copy right laws. 2 mods that come to mind is the Middle earth mod and the Tatooine mod both for morrowind. C'mon guys you wanna tell me you worked for months on end, creating these mods and not one of you though of finding out about copyright infrigements first? You get our hopes up just to be shot down in dissapointment Ok, so you're not allowed to charge money for it, or publish it, why not just release the mods for free? Just put it on some anonamouse (can't spell that word) server, free for all to download. Are you guys seriously just going to throw away months and months of work? Or maybe this is just a case of false advertising, and these mods where never being made in the first place? -- Shoot them all, Let God sort them out! |

the problem is that even releasing for free is infringement and thus persecutable. those mods are fuxored, no chance to make use of them in a legal way if hit by CnD. |

What I'm saying is, If those corporate big wiggs stuck it to me after so many months of hard work, I'll definateley stick it back to them by releasing the mod anyway. They can do it annonmously, heck they can mail it to me and I'll put it on a web server for the world to download. -- Shoot them all, Let God sort them out! |

No. It doesn't hurt to be original though -- < insert subject games here >

do not underestimate law suits. if you publish some work (no matter if free or commercial) that contains work of that company they can (and mostly will) sue you for CRI. the only way to protect yourself from any form of CnD or CRI is to come up with your own ideas. then it's you who can CnD and CRI |

Yeah... money pwns everyone --

Exactly. And you'd get fine thousands of dollars just because you were too stubborn to change some things. Why don't people take the original route and come up with their own ideas instead of banking off of licenses -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

or if they are, maybe actually checking with the corporation first --

I can understand where Draken's coming from. Look at DBZ Bid for power, And Mortal Kombat Quake, and Aliens Quake. All Squashed because the "Companies" couldn't profit off it. There are a few that if you present it to them logicically they can usually work out a deal with you. I was lucky I researched mine *Currently* witha friend that worked with the company and the ova series it was from. --

They will never usually make a deal with you. I tried to start development on a Final Fantasy mod in the past, and I sent an email to Square-Enix to see if it'd be alright to make a mod, even if it meant changing a bunch of things to what they see fit for a fan-made mod. Here's what I got back:
So you see, you still can't be successful, even if you try to be flexible. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

What gets my the most is why people even bother making a mod off something already existant in the entertainment industry. What ever happened to originality?! -- When there is no more room in Hell, the Dead will walk the Earth. chis wrote: |

that is exactly the main beef i've got with todays gaming industry and why i hate it: nothing but lame reproductions (either on fan side or company side), graphic-whoring and much more. i really miss games that come up with an idea which is not main-stream, that doesn't focus on lame game elements (yes, graphic IS lame. slam good artists behind it and you've got your graphics... but the game still sux). |

because in terms of games not mods, alot of these sell. For example star wars and crap, star wars has a lot of fans . And alot of them will buy the games cuz they are star wars. |

Makes complete sense to me |

Not to mention, money = success. You can't always cater to the underground environment. There are plenty of great games that have been released (Otogi, Katamari Legacy, Shadow Hearts, etc.), but they've become sleeper hits from one way or another (Otogi was barely marketed at all, and Shadow Hearts was released a day before Final Fantasy . So, you're going to be seeing that a lot, especially sequels to franchises. Just keep this in mind: later on, no one is going to be satisfied with another recreating of an old product. You have to bring the innovation, so you set the standard for next-generation video games/mods. Stand out on your own, and success will be brought to you.
