Luckily he survived, basically his throat got slit.

article wrote: It was a routine play for Clint Malarchuk. St. Louis right winger Steve Tuttle was charging toward the Buffalo Sabres' goalie with defenseman Uwe Krupp closing in from behind.

As the puck flashed through the crease, Krupp grabbed Tuttle and Tuttle's leg kicked into the air, his skate blade slicing through the exposed flesh under Malarchuk's mask.

Nearly 14 years later, Malarchuk remembers his first words to trainer Jim Pizzutelli:

"Am I going to live?''

"I did think I was done," said Malarchuk, now the Panthers' goaltending instructor. "Somewhere I'd heard that if you cut your jugular vein you've got a matter of minutes, like three minutes. I was going through the minutes preparing to die. I thought I had just three minutes to live and I've got a lot of repenting to do in three minutes."

Malarchuk's injury on March 22, 1989, at Buffalo's War Memorial Auditorium, was one of the most horrific in sports history.

Blood spurted onto the ice from Malarchuk's lacerated neck. Two spectators suffered heart attacks at the grisly sight and at least two Sabres vomited.

Pizzutelli didn't panic. He was no stranger to blood and gore, having served in Vietnam, but he had never seen anything like this at a hockey rink. He reacted quickly -- the videotape shows that 14 seconds passed from the time Malarchuk was cut until Pizzutelli closed off the artery by applying pressure with his hand wrapped in a sterile pack.

"I don't know how much blood he lost, but it was a lot," said Pizzutelli, the Sabres' trainer for the past 17 years. "We were very lucky. Our doctor said what happened was he lacerated the external jugulars. Maybe another eighth of an inch and there's nothing you could have done."

Malarchuk struggled to stay conscious, sensing that if he did pass out he'd never wake up. Aware that his mother had been watching the game on TV, he had an equipment manager call and tell her he loved her. Then he asked for a priest.

Something in his mind was telling him to get off the ice, "because I didn't want to die on the ice. I was saying prayers. I was scared."

Soon he was on his way to Buffalo General Hospital, where a team of doctors spent 90 minutes and used 300 stitches to close the wound, which also included severed muscles and tissue.

Malarchuk had been traded to Buffalo less than a month before the injury and had played in only a handful of games with the Sabres, so fans had no idea how he would be affected. They started getting an idea of his resolve when he appeared at the arena in street clothes two days later and got a standing ovation -- "That was one of the most emotional times of my life" -- and was back in uniform a week after that.

"I grew up in a rodeo environment, where if you get bucked off a horse you get right back on," Malarchuk, 41, said. "While the media was speculating my career was over, I was just saying, 'The sooner I get back in there, the better off I'll be.' "

now come on, u cant dis hockey and all who play it cause of this accident.. Seriously, how often does somethin like this happen? The dude with the fireworks, he WANTED to get shot, but this guy sure as hell never tried to get his throat cut from a skate. Its not stupidity, accidents happen.

Apr 4 2004 Anchor

hmm, using razor sharp blades on ice, which it hard to stand on, hitting a metal object at 40 mph at a casual crouched eye level....

no, its not! Called fun.. F-U-N. Just cause YOU dont like the concept doesnt mean everyone else on the planet has to be constantly afraid of somethin that involves a slight risk such as that. Some people like to live their life certain ways, and if u play a certain sport in which injury can happen, that doesnt make u a retard. I think everyone here has played somethin inwhich they could and probably DID get injured in. So are we all retarded for that? No! So no need to say someone else is just because they're not you.

Yeah for someone who supposedly has an IQ of 140-150, why would this topic exist then :| Theres injuries in every sport, football has it very often, and NASCAR had the recent death of Dale Earnhardt. And because of the injuries, sports are retarded?
Let's see you play hockey, then.

Yeah a slight risk

I think you'll find theres more major injuries in hockey than football or rugby. Also note I didnt say not to play it; who am I to stop waste's of space jumping off a bridge? To be fair I think your taking this to hart and getting riled up over a moot point; hockey is alot more dangerous and is more un-natural to the human way (ice - I dont remember god making 50% of earth ice, only a mere 18%).

Also Ill think you'll find that none of us have had our throats slit or our necks broken in the last 18 months, or in any major sport either, except hockey ofcourse.

I cant find any intelligence in this post. NASCAR isnt a sport, doesnt involve people on there feet and just doesnt even relate to any contact sport.

You seem to miss the point alot, sports arent retarded because you get injured, casual injuries are fine, but getting your throat slit or your neck broken isnt a casual injury now is it?

Makes about as much sense as chasing a ball the size of a dinner plate around a giant field while everyone dives and kicks at it, trying to eventually knock it into a netted box while a lone man scrambles to stop its approach with any body part he can move in front of it.

All sports can be broken down into idiotic logic, lest we forget that they originated for the purpose of proving who is a better person through athleticism and physical prowess. All sports have their injuries, all sports have their hazards.

looks, accidents happen, and just cause someone enjoys a particular sport inwhich accidents that are more sevre may occur does NOT make them a retard! Nobodys a retard if they dont mind that risk, i think someone is more of a retard if they're afraid to take it.

azz0r : I cant find any intelligence in this post. NASCAR isnt a sport, doesnt involve people on there feet and just doesnt even relate to any contact sport.

Is that why its called motor sport? It involves people competing against each other to determine who is best. They are possibly in more danger than anyone who does a sport "on there feet" as they are goin at speed upwards of 200mph with amny liters of flamable liquid underneth them. While doing this they can pull many g's putting a large amount of stress on the body. Any form of "motor sport" can easily be classified as a sport the only difference being they are in a car.

OH and that guy is damb lucky 2 b alive .... its amazing he wanted to go back after that

Attn azzor

In my humble opinion if you are going to comment on something maybe….just maybe you should know a little about it before hand. First of all numbnuts pucks are not made of metal they are vulcanized rubber. Second of all yes skates are sharp but it is not hard to “stand” or skate on them if you grew up playing hockey as I did. Third of all pucks travel a touch faster than 40mph…..try over 100mph in the hands of a good professional but averaging about 80mph for the rest of us. This may be fuel for your argument but my argument is Clint Malarchuk is not a retard, he is one tough cowboy. He is one of the most courageous and respectable personalities in the history of professional sports and has been a personal hero of mine since I was a kid. When he’s not goaltending he spends his spare time competing in rodeos. I don’t know if you’ve ever been bucked of a horse before but ain’t a pleasurable experience and takes balls to get back on. Mr. Malarchuk got back on the metaphorical horse after his near fatal injury and returned to the N.H.L not two week later. By the way what that video doesn’t show is that he actually skated off the ice under his own power or the fact that he never lost his composure and was able to joke around with the ambulance attendants saying “Do you think you can have me back for the third period.” My advice to you is cowboy the fuck up grow some balls and learn to play a man’s sport….and next time you feel like calling Mr. Malarchuk a retard you should try it to his face. Mind you being the kind human being that he is although he could tear you a new asshole he’d probably just smile and say Happy Trails.
