This is a great idea for a contest! Thought I'd give it a go...

Here's some quick silhouettes for my Boss Infected - The Flock. This character's head is surrounded by a cloud of birds that he can unleash on the survivors. The birds then swarm around the player, attacking them and obscuring their vision. The Flock can also be picked up by his cloud of birds and so fly over short distances.  I plan on doing some sketches to visualize how this character attacks/flies etc which I'll maybe include as part of the final illustration.

I'm going to work up some thumbnails for my survivor next. I'm thinking of some sort of burly, homeless giant. Probably female. Should be fun.

Any feedback would be great. Look forward to seeing how everyone's entries develop.

Cheers, Nick.

Damn, I just noticed this :O Only 10 days left. Here's a first knocking out of a survivor concept:

User Posted Image

I realize the face is very basic looking (anime-like almost) but as I said, this is just a first draft :D Oh, and those be bandages on his hands. They were burned rescuing a woman from a burning car (hot metal handles) in the early days of the outbreak. Though he succeeded in pulling the woman from the car, she died before he could get her to the hospital - where he received his bandages. More on his back story later.

And I have a two part question:
Firstly, I couldn't tell if it was mandatory to create a zombie and a survivor, or not, which would be kind of a pain if it was because I'm doing concept art for a mod that has lots of zombies (or at the very least zombie like creatures) and I don't want to burn myself out early on the subject :P

And the second part is, if it's not mandatory, would only submitting one picture hurt my chances of winning second place?

I don't think its mandatory to have a survivor AND an Infected, and I sure as hell hope it doesn't effect the chances of winning :o

Cute, I like the second one. Though, I don't think nurses actually wear uniforms like that... Unless she is supposed to be a stripper or something?

new people. hi guy's and have fun :)

@oishiiniku:
really nice style, but...

it seems to me that your sketch on the left is my surivor "prist" as an "infected" :tired:...
the "pastor"-theme is not mine, but i would be thankful if you choose the right one, or another "theme"... because of the idea.

@cosentino:
i love the idea, of an (sexy) nurse-survivor,
but i think her uniform is a bit "offpoint", like in b-movie's or cheap porn's^^

Shambler_Sketch

Concept of "The Bleeder"

The virus has mutated this individual's blood to become highly corrosive. The blood seeps through the infected's flesh, and pools at their feet. Muscle and tendons have become loose and hang limply off the bones of the arms.

When the Bleeder swings his arms in attack, blood will flick off and strike nearby targets in a frontal arc. Anyone within the spray will sustain a small amount of acid based damage over time. This combined with the damage of the actual claw attack combines for decent damage. Conversely if a Survivor is too close to the Bleeder while damaging him, they will receive "splash damage" from the fresh wounds they create.

The Bleeder's Special: Speed Boost
This ability allows the Bleeder to close ground quickly to get in where he can do the most harm.

Cons: The Bleeder is in a weakened physical state, so he has less health than the standard 250 (150 or 175)
-The Bleeder leaves a trail of bloody footprints behind him, can be tracked easier. Makes a faint sizzling and gargling  sound when near, or if above the Survivors the sound of blood dripping and sizzling gives away his presence.

Colored version to come.

^^ I don't see why that matters, even though his character is also a priest it looks totally different and original to me.

please don't get me wrong, i am not pissed off or something - it is his choice... (my english is not that good, please excuse that^^)
it was just a favor - in my opinion the "pastor" has to be alive, fighting against the evil-virus and even more important, his own principles.
not just slipping into the infected-role...
the idea behind the "flock" is really great (whether it fits or not :thumbup: ), so switiching the character-theme won't kill the idea in my eye's.

Update :

  • Shorter heels
  • Head updated (still working on it)

@Sentar:
yeah, much better (@heels ;))! i like his face, the pose and the look - nice!

I guess i may have taken this too far for a first submission, get carried away sometimes.  Anyway face hugger doctor.... The virus has moved to the lower abdomen and makes use of the many meters of organs located therein.  In an attempt to treat his symptoms Dr. Entral subjected himself to an ad-hoc cure cooked up in his lab, inadvertently fortifying his intestines.  They now possess the strength to lash out and pull victims into a suffocating embrace.

I realize this is a variant of the smoker.

All critiques are welcome.

Uriel: looks like it is going to be awesome when its finished, however i think that looks more like a Resident Evil character than l4d.  Like those bandersnatchers (i think thats the name) from RE:CV and some type of expirament subject (lisa trevor, REmake).

Also, I have a question for the people in charge here.

Okay, so the infected are indeed human, so does that mean they die the same way humans do? If their insides are exposed or cut do they die? Or can their insides mutate and attack? I would imagine that the virus can ADD onto the human but if anything happens to the human (host) then the virus would then die. So technically Severed arms, legs, guts, wouldn't fit in the l4d world, correct? Only additions to the Human (host), like the giant boils and warts/ deformations that are seen in the 'l4d assest package' work. Right?

If all these, cut in half bodies, decaying corpses, severed limbs, work in the l4d world then i'm starting over because i can make some awesome stuff without those limitations. haha

Updated Image for "The Bleeder"

Work in Progress, Under painting/early color version. I intend to desaturate the flesh tones to match the palette of the L4D game as well as refine the sinew hanging from arms.....  plus much more.

You can be as inventive as you want. It certainly helps to have a nice description to go along with your imagery to explain your concept and how it fits in. Not a whole lot has been revealed about the world of the infected so we (the judges) are drawing from the same data available to you. I'm really enjoying some of the wilder concepts, like the unfortunate doctor above. The explanation for his intestine tentacles seems like a plausible cause for his condition.

oishiiniku.. gorgeous concept, love it,

Wilhelm_III look forward to seeing more detail, maybe ripped clothes and stuff would be cool :) looking good so far.

cosentino I wish my legs were that long :P haha nice concept, nicely drawn, even if it is a little Cliché. On the second image would the cross on her hat be pointing more forward? Away from the screen instead of directly facing the viewer? I don't know just something I noticed :S I like the light shining from her gun :)

TKAzA..... lol

KEEP_IT_UP! When given a theme like this it is unavoidable that similar ideas will form.

Sentaro Like the concept. A suggestion could be loosening up the brush strokes a little perhaps? I can
imagine it working as a nice loose sketchy image. I like his pose, and his long coat works nicely :)

uriel88 Love it...it actually makes me feel a bit ill when I look at his insides lol...which means you did your job well haha. Would the top of his left leg support that huge foot? It looks like it could just rip off if he moved but I don't know if that's what you're
going for. Maybe he would benefit from having a very slightly thicker thigh to support the foot if not? Or perhaps an extra muscle on his knee holding it on, it could have a gap between the left side of his knee (facing him) and then an
extra muscle linking his lower leg on the right side of his knee. Anyway I love it, I just like to offer suggestions :)

ZeeGermans nice image, like
the pose. Really like the idea of his blood becoming highly corrosive, not to
be too gruesome or anything, but imagine the sounds hahahah sizzling flesh mmmmm :P

Wow, as keep said,away for a day and look what happens...some awesome stuff going on here:

Monkeyboy: Loving the idea of a dinner lady infected, can't help thinking she'd be a more entertaining survivor though.

Sentaro: your new stuff's cool, but i still much prefer your first sketch of the homeless guy, it has way more character oozing out of it in my opinion, but very nice stuff.

DMBoyle: Lovely first sketch, looking forward to seeing what she does and how you develop it.

JackWhat: Liking how your idea is developing, i think i agree about the characters eyes though, silouhette's much stronger now though, turning into a pretty strong image.

Keep: Again with the beautiful pencilwork..lovely drawings and i love the idea of a progressive virus, i like the idea of an old blind guy with the agility of a monkey...like an infected mr. miyagi or something:D

Oishiiniku: WOW.. lovely stuff...great concept for a character, lovely artwork, have to say not sure how it'd fit into L4D, but still nice stuff.

Wilhelm III: sounds like there could be an interesting backstory with this guy, be intereted to see how it develops.

Cosentino: HELLOOOOO NURSE!

Zee germans: this one is strong i think. Nice idea with the sound cues of blood sizzling and popping to let the players know he's in the vicinity..very gruesome visually as well i'd think..nice stuff man.

Uriel: Agree with bunnyjen, gruesome concept, very effective..imagine your flashlight revealing this guy suddenly in front of you in a dark room...naassty.

Great stuff guys...really cool to see the inventiveness on display here...keep em coming, this is turning out to be very enjoyable.

Back soon with more sketches.

@wolf:
thanks, man - thanks! the first opinion to read about "the blinder"... ^^

@Bunnyjen:
kaay. i think i have to chum up with that :D

@the jury, i think the sketches of page 7 has been overlooked, no comments from you about the second option :( :

KEEP_IT_UP! wrote:i did a little sketch today while having breakfast, just a little really unperfected "infected"-idea...

(i know that i just can send one enfected- and one survivorconecpt at the end, but the one i choose is still undecided,
any thoughts
or feedback about it especially from the jury would be great ;))
