Hey folks, i've been trying to channel some recent events into a game. It's essentially a visual novel but in 3d, and features animated backgrounds - and i feel i HAVE to use the heavily animated backgrounds (characters included) to translate the emotions as the game deals with death and if you don't properly portray emotion it's just gonna seem dull...

But i'm doing this all alone, and the engine I'm using (tyranobuilder) just can't really do the smooth transitions and loops I'm looking for. Now, I'm bent on using that engine - that's not part of the question here - but the whole wanting to make sure the animated backgrounds are a thing is kinda just.. too much for me.

If you were playing a visual novel - do you find you'd be more satisfied or inclined to spend your money were the game to almost play like a movie or would you be satisfied with static backgrounds, but animated character emotions and a good story? I feel like maybe i'm expecting too much from myself - or trying to "transform" a genre that already satisfies into 'more', and that's hindering the game overall - i mean.. if the story is good, then to hell with fancy gimmicks right? I dunno.

I also feel like a poorly explained all of that.. please post questions if you have any so i can broaden this. I've just hit a dead end here... To be honest, i just need help building my moral. But, i truly need opinions. I don't know.. damn this is awkward.

I prefer the latter. I'm not fond with games which play like movies

Well as long the graphics is understandable, simple animation will do for me
