We're an Indie team (unnamed at this time) looking to make a multiplayer arena-type game mixing elements of TF2, The battlefield franchise and verious MMO's (The project, however, is NOT an MMO). YOu will need to be proficient in OpenGL and C++ as we do not have expertise in either area, and will be unable to help if you encounter any issues. I am a C++ programmer, and will be working closely with the applicant to ensure the game engine meets it's full potential. If you are interested and have expertise in C++ and OpenGL, please don't hesitate to apply with a resume and all relevent works detailed by sending an email to TadMod@hotmail.com |

All the engine programmers I've ever met are busy doing their own thing. I doubt they'd drop what they are doing to start something else. Is there any reason you can't use one of the many engines that's already out there? -- "lets say Portal is a puzzle game, so its a rehash of Tetris" |

Tadmod? Name sounds familiar. Didn't we come across each other already in connection with the Epsylon project? |

@ GIbberstein: No harm in trying @ Dragonlord: Yes, I was a modeler for you, but I missed dealines by a mile because of my HSC exams (final High School exams in Australia), so I decided to leave Epsylon to focus on my exams (I believe we had this discussion through e-mail before?). Now that's all finished, I have quite a large chunk of time on my hands, and so a friend and myself have decided to go with a small tech demo, and if that works out well, expand it into a full game. |

Why not start on something cheaper and less ambitious than an MMO? |

You must be stupid if your wanting to make a MMO engine from scratch with only you and 1 programmer. Fair enough making your own engine but saying you want to make a MMO like tf2 and battlefield doesn't sell it well at all. I'm a C++ programmer but i have my own project and if i want to go to a game i will need to see a real spark from it such as some media and other ideas which make it unquie not saying it's going to be like this and this and this etc just don't sell it well at all. Good luck. |

Yeah, now I remember. Had a couple of modelers around some time ago but none stuck to it since they had no more time due to real life. Well then good luck with the project. If possible though you should use an existing game engine. It helps to do so if one is not yet skilled in coding and engine design as going for a full engine from scratch takes time, dedication and especially quite some knowledge/experience. |

@ korge & limagic: errrr... what? "NOT an MMO" Please read more closely @ limagic specifically: Even if I wanted to make an MMO, how would your comment at all be useful? If you think you're the most amazing programmer on the planet, then congratulations, but it doesn't give you the right to downplay somebody elses idea. If you have no intention of applying for this job, either leave constructive criticism, or don't post at all. @ Sigma: thanks for pointing that out @ Dragonlord: Yeah, I would like to use an existing game engine, but none offer the full functionality that I want, for example, UDK doesn't give out source-code, making the engine completely useless for any further Multiplayer architecture changes or overhauls, and Torque doesn't seem to have cross-platform support, nor modifiable source code. I am quite profficient with C++, but I don't know OpenGL, which was the only issue holding development. I've looked at OGRE, and may perhaps learn and use it if I get no response from my job postings. |

Torque is C++, has modifiable source code, and is cross-platform. The problem is the oldest version had all three of those (Torque Game Engine), while it's creator, GarageGames, has seemingly blocked all ways of even finding it anymore. In fact I don't even see the product page anymore. If your up for finding it and doing some big engine upgrades, it might be worth it. |

@ Ninjadave: I took a look at the torque game engine and it looked quite promising... until I saw the $1000 price-tag... I'm looking for something in the price-range of $0... but honestly wouldn't mind a full-feature-engine for about $100. I might be forced to use OGRE now. I'll see if this thread picks anyone up in the next couple of days though |

The source is $1000, using the engine itself is ~$100. Thats a little over-priced in my opinion, there are cheaper options out there. |

Depends what you need and when you need the engine. If you need it right here and now for nothing then I assume you can't get around a Quake based engine right now if you want a usable package. OGRE gives you only graphics so you waste a lot of time and by the time you are done with the engine new ones are out already. |
