Hello everyone i came because i want to start making a game even though i don't have any experience.

i wanted to start small and since i don't really know how to code my better options is drawing/art.

is there some thing i could do so i can work on my strengths and get better at coding on the side.

Ask me any questions if your going to need more information to help me

A good idea would be to read tutorials/watch videos, since you didn't specify much, I guess a good start would be Unity3D?
Even if it says "3D", if by drawing/art you mean you are mostly good at 2D art and you were aiming to make a 2D game, Unity can do that too.

A good guy which is good at teaching stuff related to unity3d is Brackeys there's also Quill18Creates and rm2kdev

You can find many more (even tutorials without videos) by googling a bit.

It's extremely hard to make a game just like that. You're probably better off doing studies in coding or art then joining an existing team/project.

First of all, you could choose your game engine. Every engine, no matter how old or new, has its own charm, price and capabilities. Then, try to make a complete map, or even a small mod for the main game of this engine. During that time, you will experience yourself will all aspects of what a game needs to be done. You will see how maps are done, what kind of coding you'll need to know, how textures, models and sounds are made and, in general, you will learn what you are going to need to set up your own game. But most importantly, you will see if you actually like to be a game developer. Maybe during that time (getting to know a game engine can take up to a year) you will see that you find the process tiresome, uninteresting or, in the end, you may find it better/easier to master only one skill (2D drawings, textures and concept arts) and join a team, to see how things work from the inside.

Going solo is nearly impossible in today's engines. You will (eventually) need a strong team behind you. Of course, setting up a team means that you are experienced in at least one basic field: mapping, coding and/or modeling. And getting experience takes time. A LOT of time. As I said, getting to learn the basics of a game engine can take more than a year.

My bottom line: choose an engine, start to work with it, maybe join some classes to learn coding/2D-3D art etc. and, after you think you have gathered enough experience, join a team or assemble a small one for yourself and start working on your own game.

Good luck with your game-developing venture!

@ Plissken, it's good thing that you start small. My suggestion is to start from modding a game. Find a game that you like which features modding and creating your own maps/level then start creating your own maps/level

It may look simple but don't underestimate modding or map creation as your will learn alot about level design which is one important factor of game design

The best way to get started is to pick an engine, watch some tutorials on youtube and go from there. Some engines to start with that are relatively easy to kind of pick up are.

RPGMAKER
UNITY
UNREAL4

To start a project you need to be a generalist and/or know some people to work with you because everyone is working on their own project and you'd have pay a pretty penny to hire someone to do the things you can't do.

Hi, may i ask what kind of game you intend to make?

Since you are artist if you want to make something like visual novel game it may not hard for you.

And There are some demo of some engine, especially for FPS, that you just add some texture and edit some parameter then you got part of new game.

Other suggestion is how about you begin with find some job in video game industry first. This is "indiedb" forum but sometime you should prepare yourself first before begin your own business. Working in company will give you experience, friend, connection and salary. Doing thing alone from scratch without friend is something very difficult. Yes, there are someone who can miracle make a great hit game without much knowledge and effort but seem like that will too much depend on the luck.

the best thing to do is start with something small, u can learn a lot of stuff from the net, read instructions, watch tutorials, but u need to have some basic ground to start with, meet with some ppl who could help you out. u can use game maker or unity to start with. keep trying stuff out on it for a while.

absolutely agreed

It's really extremely hard to make a game just like that

You should start by using scratch to learn the basics of coding and game logic.

I know how you feel, I'm wanting to get into gaming but all the stuff about scripting and graphic design kinda flies over my head. I'm more of a idea/concept person.

I suggest you join an existing team. Being with other newbies would be good to prevent discrimination. Being a newbie doesn't necessarily mean they don't know anything. Perhaps you can join my team? PM me if you are interested.

Also I suggest you work in yyou're comfort zone or start wit an easy lanuage like Java or watever is favorable to you

For me these are the best to learn

  1. C++/C#
  2. Lua
  3. Java

If you ccan't learn them

Try visual proramming game engines such as what I an usin in our current InDev game

It conconstruct Classic R2

Its free but don't use Scirra's new CConstruct 2 whic is for wWeb Development and is costly
