I still don't have enough money to buy the graphic card i'm saving up for, so I can't play F.E.A.R. yet. Please tell me how it is :D

Aug 5 2005 Anchor

I'm about to go download it. The one on GameSpot was forked.

Go here to dl it, just because FilePlanet + Download Manager 2 = teh kickass: Fileplanet.com

So far, though, it definitely lives up to all of the hype. Something you don't normally see anymore. :P

question of the day: is there anything beside 'OMFG GraFX, PhySX!!!' that is even a bit interesting? so far i've seen none.

Its abit cliche at points, but excellent.

I heartily recommend it, but make sure your computer is pretty damned good (able to play doom 3 well at least) or you wont get much of a framerate.

EDIT: You want to know what's good aside from the graphics and physics?

It's hard to say from the demo...but from what i've seen of the dialogue and story, it's creepy and pretty interesting. It's not shlock .

the ai is very good, the dont just come towards you single file like the combine did. they actually spread out and communicate when you're trying to flank them. very cool.

Well, besides graphics and physics, it does offer up some really nice gameplay elements and that creepy atmosphere that, in my opinion, makes it much better than Doom 3, and leaves you wanting more.

The slo-mo mode itself is perfectly well-executed. It definitely comes in handy during the demo at some exciting parts, like when you have to cross this courtyard and avoid getting shot up. There's also this plasma weapon that, when you shoot an enemy, they get shredded into skeletons.

Basically, this is more or less focusing on the atmosphere and storyline, but hey, it's only a demo, so there's not a lot you can make out of a game like FEAR right now. I mean, these are the guys behind NOLF and Tron 2.0, so it's gotta be above average when it comes to the gameplay itself.

EDIT: And I agree, the AI is fantastic. It's not bortched, like a bunch of other FPS games. They do seem like real soldiers, communicating to each other before you enter the room, getting into formidable defensive positions behind pillars, crates (this is a warehouse of sorts), walls, etc. It seemed like you were online, facing actual people. Not to mention, the smoke, dust, and spark effects were really well done, cranking up the atmosphere even more. I had a hell of a time. :D

Well I'm yet to download the demo *curses 256k* but from what I've seen in gameplay vids and all that sort of stuff it looks like a true horror/action game that will actually hit the mark with nearly everything. However I doubt it will run on my shitty 9600XT. I need a new card :(

i am so friggen dissapointed

dargonlord, the dungeon siege demo is 1.5 gigs :-P

anyway, back to how disapointed i am.

This mod is half hl2, half clive barkers undying, it offers NOTHING NEW.

Clive Bakers Undying, little ghosty deelies popping up everywhere, spooking ya, advancing story, hell, system shock 2 did that!

then there is the omfg slowmo (havnt seen that 1.2 trillion times) physics (havok2 '2' the rescue) and generic run and gunning while in slowmo (go slowmo, shoot some guy in the head, repeat. alot.)

not only that, it's a friggen system hog, why? because they need all those purty shadows to hide the fact that this is just a very shiny version of the same crap you've seen before again and again and again.

it reminds me of the interior levels of farcry, but easier, and with slowmo.

demo rating : 2 out of 10.

Just got back from playing it. ONLY PLAY THE DEMO IF YOU CAN PLAY IT ON FULL SETTINGS. Sorry about that, but it had to be said. The gameplay doesn't stand up on it's own, the guns feel mostly underpowered which isn't helped by the fact the baddies take a lot of bullets to kill, the guns are also very bland and it looks a lot like doom3 at times. The slo-mo effects do look great, fantastic even but it's been done before in Timesplitters: Future Perfect with the time grenades, and that's a Ps2 game! It's also needs an unnessessary amount of power to show off not much.

Yea the AI is very good they will run away and re-group and will take cover. And the game does feel a little like Doom 3 but it is more scary especialy the lil girl. The effects for the slow-mo are amazing. I aslo played the multi-player beta which was still fun but could be better. This could be the best game of 2005.. But you are gonna want to play it on full settings and im sure theres a plot some where but you cant tell from the demo. I think its great and already pre-oreded my copy... :D

Here are my thoughts about the demo. First, I'll state the things I didn't like:

- Wasn't scary. (Didn't scare me at at all, but I liked what happened at that one ladder... For those who've played it though, know what I'm talking about :))

- AI felt too scripted or waypointed, and couldn't chase you everywhere. You could sit back and just pick them all off. That one guy that comes out with the minigun doesn't chase after you or anything, he sits in one place so you can slow-mo, attack, go back around the corner and recharge, then repeat.

- Flashlight was a joke. Lasts 10 seconds and not very powerful.

Now the things I liked:

- Beautiful graphics. Can't stress this point enough.

- Good gameplay. Can punch, hit with any gun, kick, etc.

- The interactive water.

To conclude, this demo was pretty disappointing. Wasn't scary, and the AI made it kind of boring. Graphically, this is a very beautiful game, so I hope the final product is a lot better. Otherwise, it's a shame they put so much effort into the engine.

I liked it for the main part, I had to turn all my settings to minimum on my laptop to get it to play with out "chug"...

The models, textures and lighting remind me of FarCry too much for me to really consider them better then decent at best.

I began running it at 1024-768, and everything on the "Maximum" setting. I was averaging around 40-45 FPS.

After I began to notice the problem mentioned in the first of my Con's section, I reduced the Res to 800-600 and got a boost of around 5-10 fps, but still noticed the "ingame load stutter".

Pro's
------
-Atmosphere was done relatively well. There were odd contrasts between the action and horror sequences but individually they worked well.
-Looked at the very least on par with the Chronicles of Riddick in terms of graphics
-The paranormal guage thing-a-ma-jig was pretty cool.

Con's
-------
-The game constantly loads events as you move so on my system I was able to fight a room with 7-8 enemies with my flashlight on with no slowdown but the moment I'd round a plain corridor with nothing in it I'd get a bad stutter as the next scripted sequence was being loaded internally.
-The graphics were decent but there wasn't anything we haven't seen before.
-Little black haired girls just don't scare me. Then again there isn't much that does. Though I'll admit the nurses in Silent Hill 2 put me on edge.
-AI wasn't anything we haven't seen before.
-Weapons were kind of bland.
-Very high system requirements. I presume if I had run it lower I wouldn't have noticed the loading sequences in game but when I was getting a solid 45-50 frames per second in large areas with multiple enemies on screen and then I would exit that area to a smaller corridor that would connect to the next larger area with multiple enemies, it would stutter for a few moments as this next area loaded up.

-A lot of people like plagiarizing previews from IGN and Gamespot about it "revolutionizing the horror genre" or something to that effect...
