How does IndieDB game ranking work? | Locked | |

I know it used to be based on how many daily views your game gets, but after looking at the top 100, the daily views counter for each game seems to be inaccurate based on that. Was it changed to a new system? |

I'm curious too. The indiedb stats don't seem to be updating every hour, and the rankings on my personal page, the visits page, and the top 100 page are all different. Also, according to my hits, I should be ranked #4th right now, but am ranked 16th. I'm quite curious if there's some kind of gateing in place. Not complaining, just curious. |

I am curious as well. I know I used to be able to get to the 20s rank fairly easy with how many views I got, now I barely break 200 even with the same amount of views. Could it have something to do with the amount of watchers the game has, averaged with the views? There has to be another factor in play. |

Happy to assist. We recently deployed a code change, which affects how rankings are calculated. In the past all it took into consideration was profile visitors. Now it takes that into consideration and also where the visitors came from. So if for example you are getting traffic from your game homepage, google, reddit, rockpapershotgun that visit will be rated higher causing your game to go higher in the rankings. Hope that helps. -- Scott Reismanis |

So with other words some website considered "preferenced" up the ranking which any other not? What's the logic behind that? Sounds rather random and baseless to me. |

it's mostly in response to a large number of fake visitors and eliminating them. I'm going to keep adjusting the ranking system - my aim is to help give many games an opportunity to be in the spotlight -- Scott Reismanis |

I got to be in the top 10 for like, a few hours, and my game had almost a thousand hits in one day from an article. So even though I had more hits than anyone else that day, I didn't quite outrank things like five nights or minecraft, and that feels pretty balanced. As much as I'm thrilled I got that much coverage, my game is not "more popular" than Minecraft. So I think you're doing a great job Scott. Now if I could just figure out if the high visit count would translate well to steam greenlight or publisher interest |

Well while Five Nights and Minecraft are super popular, it be nice to see some more variety in the rankings so we can unearth and give me games exposure. I'm going to work on a few tweaks see what can be figured out -- Scott Reismanis |
