So I've been toying around with this idea of a short non-linear game where the players are prompted to do certain things by npcs and rewarded with certain dialogue pertaining to the story. How would this be done?

Example: An NPC says that he needs help clearing out a room in a building. If you are successful in this, he rewards you with a hint or clue in the form of dialogue.

Source doesn't seem like the best engine for this. But from what you've said you should be able to set that up within hammer.

Couldn't you combine a switch and a random number generator?

There was a quest system in a HL2 mod I played recently: Bloodstone - The Journey Home. Don`t know how they did it, but maybe you can find out by looking at their code or send them a mail and ask them! ;)
