Battlefield 1942 Proprietary Refractor 2 engine
Dice.se

Using most robust 3D rendering engine available, the Proprietary Refractor 2 engine, Dice developed Battlefield: 1942, Battlefield: Road to Rome and are about to release their third, and not final title, Battlefield: Vietnam.

The engine is perfectly suited to those large scale maps with complex architecture and scenery and being able to house 64 players per server, its makes for some awesome gameplay. The engine has been optimized to allow for these large maps, complex models and large textures. So if you have a mod that requires the large out door maps, then BF1942 is for you.

Coding BF1942 isn’t really coding at all, it’s more like scripting. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to make a mod for BF1942, you just have to have a lot of time to look at text files. Every object in the game (planes, players, weapons) is described in a plain old text file and is created by assigning certain values to its properties and the engine then translates those "settings" into the objects in-game. So editing isn’t very hard once you know what your doing, but you have to know what you’re doing first.

Mod Example:

Desert Combat beta 0.7
Desertcombat.com

Desert Combat is a modern day military modification. It is focused on conflicts in the middle-east within the last decade between the various nations, From Desert Storm to Somalia. Currently, only the Desert Storm campaign - featuring Coalition and Iraqi forces - is available. This war game is a total conversion for Battlefield1942 and is based on the same principles of a FPS and arcade style vehicle sim. It will be focused around multiplayer online gameplay. This is the most popular mod for Battlefield: 1942

Half-Life Engine (Quake 1 Modified) - Used in Half-Life

Half-Life has a massive community, including lots of tutorials and modifications, many of high quality, however, the graphical prowess of Half-Life was usurped before it was ever released by Unreal, though the only reason to choose Half-Life is the size of the fanbase, as project scopes can be greatly limited by view distances, world polygon counts, a lack of features, and an amount of hard coded limits such as with weapons.

Example of a Half Life Mod:

ESF (Earth Special Forces) Esforces.com

Earth's Special Forces, Say what you will! The ESF team is one of the most dedicated teams and the Visual Delights on this mod surpass far and few mods to this date. Many don't like DBZ but deep down this mod would own you if you gave it a chance! The mod owns hands down. The problem is so many others try to copy ESF and open up a DBZ to only fail in the end. (MY IMAGE CAN GO IN THIS PART)

FLF (Front Line Force) Frontline2.com

In Front Line Force the players are divided into two teams: Attackers and Defenders. The object for the Attackers is to capture various Capture Points spread throughout the map. The object for the Defenders is to defend those points. Once a point is captured by the Attackers it cannot be taken back. The round is over when either the Attacker captures all the Capture Points or when the round time runs out, in which case the Defenders win. After the team wins, the roles of are switched. If you were previously attacking, you are now defending, and vice versa.

Unreal Engine Epicgames.com - Used in Unreal 2 : The Awakening, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Tom Clancy's : Splinter Cell, Ultima X : Odyssey, America's Army, Tribes : Vengeance, XII

The Unreal Engine is the top class of graphical power, allowing near hundreds of thousands of polygons to be displayed in one scene, however, you'll be modifying U2, UT2k3, or soon UT2k4, which are action oriented games, and is based on Unreal script, its own programming code, so extensive time may be required to successfully pull off total conversions.

Example Mods:

Siege2k3
Siege.net.ms

Siege2k3 is a modification for UT2003, which combines the gameplay of First-Person-Shooters and Real-Time-Strategy-games.

Red Orchestra
Unrealwarfarex.com
Red Orchestra is a WW2 mod that features the Germans and the Russians as the playable teams. This offers a change to the all fimiliar US and British Armys. In the up coming v2 release for Unreal Tournament 2004, all new vechicles are to be included, which will flow nicely with voice communication.

Torque Engine Garagegames.com Used in Tribes, Tribes 2, and Starsiege

A solid engine, especially in terms of networking, Torque has a fair list of abilities, and while not as impressive as newer age engines, the fact is licensing can be done with only a $100 price tag per programmer, which gives full access to the source code, something most next generation engines don't allow even to bigger name licensees.

Examples:

Orbz

Compete in fourteen immersive and richly-detailed courses set in four different themes. Accelerators and Teleporters can be used to travel great distances. Watch out for Magnets that can attract or repel your Orb. The environment also affects your Orb, so shooting out of water slows you down, hitting sand will stop your Orb quickly, and skipping across ice causes your Orb to slide further than in grass.

Tanks

Think Tanks is a tank combat game designed to be a blast for the new and experienced gamer alike with lighthearted, fast paced pandemonium. Either battling against brain-hungry bots in solo play or going head-to-head against others online, Think Tanks has something for everyone.

Doom Engine Garagegames.com Doom Engine - Used in Doom and all of it's sequels, Heretic, Hexen and Strife. (DoomE= Doom Engine)

Ten years ago on December 10th, 1993, id Software released the Doom shareware, forever changing the world of PC games. Doom pretty much out-lined what a young first person shooter genera game should be. It set the bar for future games to come. With immerse colorful levels, deadly enemies and some of the greatest gameplay any game has ever seen. Another major factor in Doom's popularity was its ability to be modified. While id had never originally intended for users to make their own levels, monsters, weapons and executable modifications, it soon became clear that fans were going to do so anyway, and so id embraced the community. Commercial products like Final Doom and the Master Levels were all made by users, and id even released their very own editing utilities for people to use and learn from. Then in 1997, id released the source code to Doom's executable itself. This allowed some of the same talented individuals to modify the very inner workings of Doom. Multiple bugs such as visplane overflows were fixed, and additions were made such as OpenGL capabilities, high resolutions, true 3D floors, slopes, scripting, and more. The executable was also extended for multiplayer, adding support for more than four players, TCP/IP support and a variety of other extensions. Speaking of multiplayer, Doom is the game responsible for deathmatch, one of the most popular online game modes in the world. For the first time players could dial up to their friends anywhere (as long as they were willing to foot the phone bill) and play Doom against one another over a modem. Doom's multiplayer was also extremely well balanced, and arguably is one of the most well balanced deathmatch games to date. In fact a few source ports have even spawned on the very premise of multiplayer and have thrived.

DoomE also has a massive community that has lasted 10 years now. DoomE is the game that launched the army of FPS games growing rapidly (my opinion, some could say it's Wolf3D engine).

DoomE world is based to vertices, lines and sectors. Lightning was set in sectors, which does not look very good on today’s standards, but looked and worked real well back then. In DoomE there can't be another room (sector) over or under another. DoomE did not have deep water, so player and all other objects just walked over the water like Jesus. In DoomE there are no sloped surfaces. So it's has this blocky look (but a cool one). DoomE is a 2,5D engine. Not a "true" 3D engine.

DoomE objects were just simple hitboxes and the graphics were 2d sprites. Generally DoomE objects were never allowed to go over other objects, in Heretic, Hexen and Strife some things were able to go over other objects.

And now: Some people of the massive Doom community has started making updates to the DoomE. So far most of them are looking excellent and having all sorts of new stuff to expand the ability to mod the games or do new episodes. Some of these updates has increased the D factor to at least 2,75 by having "fake" floors/ceilings/deep water done by some "tricks". Some updates also adds the possibility to make sloped surfaces, which in my opinion can make outside areas much better (inside areas too).

Mod Example:

Doom3Genetic
Doom3genetic.ngz-network.de

Militaries and industries struggle for power in a world full of pollution, in which the government tries to maintain the illusion of Democracy. Though wars and diseases have tortured the land, the world’s population is steadily rising. Most people live in poverty, as they are homeless and unemployed. Society struggles for survival every day. Though medicine and technology in general have made it possible for the human race to avoid sabotage and disruption, only those of higher class are able afford life-extending genetic engineering, plastic surgery for unborn children, and remedies for cancer. Pollution is a worldwide problem, causing death and decay in various areas of the world. Businesses are not willing to change to cleaner and more efficient ways of production. Mankind is in urgent need for a new habitat.

THE ANT FARM: ANT'S TWO DOOM
Alpha.zimage.com

Co-operative play! It is for players who want serious play instead of deathmatches. It includes a short, interactive story. The only way to find out the whole story is by playing!

Quake 3 engine Idsoftware.com Used in Quake 3, Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt/Pacific Assault/Spearhead, Star Trek: Elite Force I/II, Soldier of Fortune 2, Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast/Jedi Acadamy and Return to Castle Wolfenstien.

Quake 3's engine was ahead of its time when released and still games are having a hard time beating the standard it set. Now surpassed by the Unreal Warfare engine, Quake 3 still holds its own in the modding department, home to mods such as Quake 3 Fortress and Urban Terror. The impeccable netcode allows for smooth playing online, and texture editing is easy using only JPG's and ".skin" files. Also shaders are used in Quake 3, meaning animated textures are easy to make and smoother than most.

Mod Example:

SuperHeroes Arena
Batmite.com

This modification gives the player the opportunity of being a superhero, possessing the powers that a superhero has. There are about 60 powers, 10 weapons and 7 classes to choose from, giving the player a huge choice of combinations. More special effects than you have seen in any other mod!

True Combat
Truecombat.com

Ready for a fun mod for Quake 3? A quake 3 mod that is realistic, but yet fun at the same time? True Combat is the newest mod to be released on the block and its Great!

MAX-FX2 Engine 3drealms.com & Rockstargames.com - Used in Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

MAX-FX2 combines the high polycounts of today’s engines with the slow motion flexibility and particle engine of the MAX-FX engine (Max Payne 1), creating the most cinematic game ever. Bullet time speed and details (i.e.: color overlay, motion blur, wide-screen mode) are all easily implemented with one line of code, the same goes for weapons code and all Particle Effects, Sound effects, Post-Process effects can be used for any action (i.e.: taking painkillers, attacking and particle effects can be attacked to any character bone). However, the lack of multiplayer support severely hinders the MAX-FX2 engine's popularity among modders.

Mod Example:

MAX PAYNE: Kung Fu Edition
Ultimate-gamer.com

MAX PAYNE: Kung Fu Edition 3 is the 3rd and probably most significant, installment of this acclaimed MAX PAYNE modification. An ongoing personal project of mine started in 2001, MAX PAYNE: Kung Fu Edition's simple goal is to bring the cinematic flare of Hong Kong kung fu movies to the already highly cinematic style of MAX PAYNE.

True Matrix Total Conversion
Fileplanet.com

The True Matrix TC for Max Payne converts this popular game into The Matrix, complete with new weapons, characters, and music from the hit film.

Crytek Crytek.de - Used in FarCry

I think FarCry is readying itself to become the next gen mod platform. It is a very solid engine displaying capabilities rival those of both half-life and doom3, in-fact one might say that it combines the best aspects of both.

Some of the more important features include, polybump technology ( a system very much reminiscent of Doom 3’s acclaimed dual model system, which takes a high poly model and overlays it over a low polygon model to create an illusion of detail.), it also features very sophisticated A.I (perhaps the most sophisticated to date). As well as the holy grail of next-gen engines real time lighting. Some of the less important features are the cliché vehicle support, and huge deferrable terrain)

The game will come with a very powerful Cryedit editor that amongst many of its features allows real time editing (this means no map complies, and *GASP* the ability to experience the environment your creating dynamically), not to mention that the Ubisoft website (www.farcrythegame.com) has set aside a part of their site for the modding community.

Mod Example:

Operation Bermuda
Opbermuda.dna-drivers.nl

A future mod for Fry Cry about the Bermuda Triangle. Still in the developing stage, and the team is hard at work.

Grand Theft Auto Rockstargames.com - Vice City

The Engine Used in GTA: Vice City is one of the most advanced out today. It supports a map size of approximately 2KM and includes support for vehicles in the form of cars, bikes, boats, planes, and helicopters. Each vehicle type is defined with its own physics. While no official SDK has been released, modders took it upon them selves to learn the inner workings of the game. With time the learned how to modify and create new car models, place custom objects on the map and code in the proprietary code used in the game, the "main.scm".

Mod Example:

San Angeles
Sanangeles.net

San Angeles is a mod for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It consists of a completely new city and story (which are detached from and have no relation to the Grand Theft Auto universe), new vehicles, new weapons, and many new features.

Croteam engine Croteam.com – Serious Sam

Serious Engine was developed by Croteam and incorporates the latest state of the art 3D technologies. Serious Engine is main power behind FPS games "Serious Sam: The First Encounter" and "Serious Sam: The Second Encounter" for PC and "Serious Sam" for Xbox, published by Gathering of Developers / Take 2 Interactive / Gotham Games.

The engine is suitable both for indoor and outdoor scenes and allows very complex architecture and scenery. It is also specifically optimized to allow large spaces and large numbers of entities in the game and on the screen at the same time. That enables an arcade action feel never before felt in 3D gaming.

The Engine is suitable for both first and third person games, and can be largely customized to suit specific needs of a game. The Engine is designed to work on all of today's Win32 platforms: Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2k/XP. That way, game development can be done on a professional operating system like Win2k or WinXP which is usually more comfortable for developers than using the average consumer operating systems.

Upon looking on the site Croteam.com there is information concerning Serious Sam 2.

Mod Example:

Pro-Pain Beta v2.0
3dactionplanet.com

Pro-Pain is a multiplayer deathmatch and team deathmatch game that features tactical weapons and transforming robo-mechs. Most popular mod for Second Encounter

*me would love you to add to it, all you do is copy and past then if you have a fun and finished mod for the game we dicussed link the mod and write a little paragraph about it.

this is all we are looking for. this thread will stay open over the weekend!
