I've been taking a look at some solos from Led Zeppelin songs, and I was wondering how Jimmy Page manages to pick each note so damn fast.

CHIZZ-O WINS TEH PRIZE.

On a side note, my friend Joe learned how to play Stairway to Heaven, and he said it was easily one of the hardest pieces he's ever practiced. But he said he mastered it.

Page is by far one of the best guitarists in history, so I'm not surprised that his stuff is hard to play :P

I wonder if its just coincidence that, as I post this, theres an advertisement for guitar picks...

Speaking of fast guitarists, this guy isn't bad I suppose: Angelo.com

No way in hell. I've heard a little of his stuff (can't remember what it is) but the likes of Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana and Kirk Hammet shit all over him IMO. Hammet single handedly has easily created some of the best guitar work in Metal, Rock and Thrash history, not to mention what him and Hetfield have done together.

haha you haven't heard him then or seen him.. I can play every metallica guitar solo to date, jimi hendrix is nothing, santana is nothing, havent heard much of satriani, Jimmy page has about 60 effects going at once just to throw tht out there. Oh yeah and Stevie Ray Vaughan plays alot of Hendrix only alot better.

Or so you think.

I can play every metallica guitar solo to date,

I used to be able to play alot of Beethoven, Bach and Mozart on the piano, but it doesn't stop them from being icons of piano history.

jimi hendrix is nothing, santana is nothing,

Still some of the best.

havent heard much of satriani,

Neither, but I like what I've heard

Jimmy page has about 60 effects going at once just to throw tht out there. Oh yeah and Stevie Ray Vaughan plays alot of Hendrix only alot better.

I personally know alot of guitarists. They can all play alot of shit. Most of them can play Metallica, Greenday, some Hendrix. I do not know one person who can play any of Page's stuff. Several have tried but they just can't get anywhere.

Thats the point I have never tried Page's stuff so I don't know but I sure as hell can't play much of Vaughans stuff... I can play like "Pride N Joy" "Texas Flood" and "Mary Had A Little Lamb" thats it...the Vaughan brothers together are even crazier.

EDIT: Though if you want someone to compare Page too since the music genres differ so much try Steve Vai or Malmsteen they are insane.

EDIT2: Oh yeah and if you are like so many that htink tapping is so crazy... its really easy actually once you get the hang of it.

Well duh, everyone of their songs is like the same 4 chords.

On a side note, my friend Joe learned how to play Stairway to Heaven, and he said it was easily one of the hardest pieces he's ever practiced. But he said he mastered it.

It is if you've never finger-picked before but besides that it's not really technically challenging at all. It was like second actual song I ever learned on guitar.

Yeah biggest problem with stariway to heaven is the length lol.

I think it just takes years of practice combined with skill.
Also amazes me how they always strike every fret perfect every time.

Yeah like I said I can play alot of solos and stuff, but I could never even get close to them as far as skill. I can't write music worth crap either. :P

Or not considering it's what practically every beginning guitarist learns. All you need is a little talent to make it sound like the real thing. It's not THAT hard to play at all.

Kirk Hammet, like Metallica themselves, is hugely overrated. He's not really that great of a guitarist. Sure, he's pretty good, but you can't compare him to virtuosos like Yngwie and Steve Vai.

As Hate|3reed said, tapping is not actually as difficult as you may think.

One of the most underrated guitarists of all time is Marc Knopffler, who played for Dire Straights. Stairway to heaven isn't really all that hard, it is long and annoying to play, but is great to listen.

Look for "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straights, great song and the live version especially has some _great_ guitar.

I total agree with this guy above me, its one of the best song to play, but f*ck is it hard.
"Sultans of Swing" rules!!
