Hi Rovato,

I work in Online Marketing and have a good few years of experience under my belt by now. There are plenty of websites - a lot of them very good - with details of what you should or shouldn't do when marketing your product or service. The principle for games is essentially the same. The question is of course what type of budget you have in mind. If you want to spend as little as possible, then SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is your answer - although this is not a quick fix and will require a decent amount of invested time. Search Engine Land is a pretty good and reliable source to stay up to date with the latest trends and regulations.

If you do have some money you want to invest and want to see quick results, then PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising is your friend. Google Adwords has a very straight forward overview of how it works for you.

Of course you also have the Social Media and YouTube routes to go down for some extra coverage, interaction and engagement.

The key thing really is for you to understand what you want to achieve by marketing your game. Is it a finished product? If so, you would be interested in making sure people know its there and are able to play it. If you're still developing, then perhaps for now you are only interested in getting the word out and building some awareness of your game's brand to build a community around it, so that when it's finished, you already have a sizable amount of people willing to play your game.

There is a lot of ground to cover with marketing, as I'm sure you can imagine. If you want some more information or perhaps even would like some help with marketing your game, just drop me a PM. I'd be happy to help out.

I'm currently in the same boat in researching about marketing my current game, which is coming out soon! Along with my website, I created a Twitter and Facebook to help promote it and my indie development team altogether.

Just like Setis said, I think it is important to understand the current state of the game. Again, I'm trying to build awareness before my game releases which I would highly suggest if you're still developing it. I would also suggest to begin posting on certain discussion boards or forums that you already belong to.

I'm also learning and there does seem to be a lot that goes into marketing. Good luck on you're game!

I found this neat gem: Gameacademy.com

A friend told me that it's important to build hype and begin marketing your game several months in advance. This is because, once your game is actually finished, you're competing with a number of other games developed at the same time- the one that has been promoted the longest has a greater likelihood of getting that attention it needs for when it's finally released.

That said, marketing advice site? Meh. Google it, you'll find some occasional tips here and there but I think the best information comes from the source. Contact some other game developers who successfully marketed their games, talk to them about their process. It's also good to have connections. :)

I would first off like to start with that I agree with both of you fine lads. But the problem is too get the right amount of hype and attention. Too little/much will do the opposite of good and it might just start to get annoying *cough Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare cough* and will then create a subgroup that would target the bad sides of the game. Now the guy above us mentioned that he created a website which is great. I would also recommend to advertise here on IndieDB.

Best of luck

If the game is good, people will spread the word. Focus on developing a game that you're going to be proud of first.

Yes I agree but the problem is that people need to know that there is a product. They also need to know why they should go and get your product.

I work as a communicator and, to some extent, with marketing the library. When I have shown indie games at the library I have notice that the interest is great, awesome even, but there is a lack of knowledge about them in general.

For indie developers, we're finding this to be an invaluable resource: Pixelprospector.com

Invaluable means valuable? What a country.

One thing that really helps is cross promotion. If you have a website about your game then reciprical linking is an excellent way to get traffic. Is anyone is interested in some cross promotions let me know. My website is Chomp-game.com and email is kbingh64@gmail.com

I realise that this thread is quite old by now.. but just wanted to share a piece of advise. don't go too crazy on cross promotions and cross linking. If you're not careful or not following Google's linkbuilding guidelines, their algorithms can very quickly put a stop to it. While you do get some traffic from cross linking, the real benefit is in generating link juice (or SEO authority), which in turn helps you rank better in Google's SERPs. The flipside is that if Google feels you are gaming the system or are not adhering to their guidelines your rank and authority will be nullified and you can say bye bye to good search results.

Instead, focus on good, quality content. This will be of much greater benefit to you in the long run. Alternatively, if you really are keen on cross promotions and cross linking, make sure you add a rel="NoFollow" tag into your . This will tell Google's bots to not assign link authority to the related link.
