I know htere's probably 10 of these things a day but it's worth a try considering I've not found anything close to this.

Basically, there was a game for the PS1 back in the old days of gaming called "G-Police".

For those of you who don't like wikipedia or Youtube, G-Police was, according to multiple people, reviewers and gamers alike, drastically under-rated.
It's a shooter, but instead of being on foot, your in a futuristic jet-helicopter gunship that can be armed to the teeth with all sorts of weapons and as a police officer piloting this gunship, of course you have to shoot enemies through a variety of missions but words do a very poor job of describing how much fun this game was.

Since playing it again recently and barely managing to complete it, I thought "Damn, this game is ripe to be done in Source/UE3 or something like that"

I've often thought of modding myself but I'm using Flash on a project that's going to take me at least 3 years of free weekends to finish. I just can't manage to learn a new system in a short space of time and manage it all myself, so my question is this:

Is there any modder out there that knows this game and thinks that it's ripe to be brought into the modern age? The developer (Psygnosis) long since went out of business after making a sequel. Failing that, anyone remember this game fondly and have similar wishes?

I have Weapons of Justice, but never played the first. Though I did play a very long demo, and WOJ is not too dissimilar, definitely good games. Shame they never made a g-police 3, not sure if it was intended, the story did leave with cliffhanger though.
It would be great to see it built onto a modern engine, I can imagine it'd look very similar to its concept art, and the city would really be something.

Afraid I can't really offer to start or work on anything like it myself, but would love to see a single level (maybe an original level?) basically showing off the visuals and gameplay.
Just on the subject of game remakes, quite a few games would probably be great to see re-made, not a full game, but simply everything in 'HD' in one level, Colony Wars and its sequels for one, that would look amazing for today. Really wish I'd could take that on, so little time. :(

Glad you played it! I have a some experience with 3ds max and could model a few things, but a full city dome might take a few weeks. I haven't really modded games before apart from one UT2004 level so I'm not sure about the best processes to doing it. Still...I may just re-install 3ds and churn out a havoc and venom or something. The laughable render distance of both games was just that. A one level remake would do pretty well (multiplayer?). Anyhow, I'll see what I can do about getting a model picture up here soon.

Slightly related: Everything Psygnosis did was awesome, but my personal fav is still Colony Wars: Vengance, such an amazing game.

I think they did Wipeout as well. More win! But yeah, not managed to get any concept pictures for a havoc or venom gunship so I'm just going to guess it. Will probably post a picture here in a week or two once I'm happy with it.

Weapons of justice happens to have concept art, should be able to extract the images from it. I think there is concept for the original craft, had all the other vehicles at least like the raptor and APC. APC actually looks a lot like the APC from Aliens, I think that must have been their main inspiration.
Bit like the Titans and Super-Titans from colony wars look similar to Star Trek ships. :p

I remember playing G-Police on PC and I have to agree, a highly underrated game. It had a very special atmosphere to it.

It would be cool if someone could make a new G-Police though finding people for such a project might be hard. If you're serious about this, I suggest you try to find as many fans of the game as possible (with skills of course) and start small, just replicating the gameplay of the original. Then maybe you could expand making it both FPS on the ground and in the air. With modern engines like Unreal, Source, CryEngine 3 that wouldn't be an impossibility.

Ah the PC port was ok, but the lowest sensitivity setting for the mouse controls mean a gush of air would spin you around at least 6 times. Right now, this is a curiosity as I'm trying to make my own Flash game that may end up in another thread if I get overwhelmed. But the first steps will be to get some high poly models up here and see what kind of responses there are. Still not made a start on anything yet, but I've not forgotten about it. But we'll see how we do eh?

Ah, I always played with a joystick so I wouldn't know about that problem.

Cheers. Got 3ds max installed and am working on a havoc model. If I get it up here and manage to post a link to the file, would anyone liek a go of texturing it? I can't texture myself without making some kind of abomination. But yeah, when it's done, I'll post it up here if I can and anyone who want's to make it look awesome is welcome to it.

...any takers on the idea above?

Also been thinking of how to actually get this into a mod from the ground up. Easiest thing I can think of would be UE3 and copy the havoc into the other 'flying' vehicles and give it some custom properties so its more responsive with a sharper acceleration etc. Trouble is, no idea how to do any of that...
Is it worth me putting a project/group up on here and getting a few enthusiasts together?

Closest thing I could find. This is a g-p craft. As for the enemy mech
thing, I think it's called the "Krakov Mining Droid" and it's a very
nasty thing to fight.

As a reply to your previous post, that's quite a nice start on the model! I see you're sort of half-serious about this idea. What you need is some other people that are willing to dedicate their time and skills to this project. But first you need to decide if you are going to do this or not. Just a definite yes or no so people know for sure you're willing to see this through all the way to the end.

Personally I think it's a great idea to renew G-Police with a modern engine, you might want to think twice about using UE3 though. There are already so many mods/games being made with the UDK that you'll have a hard time finding coders who have the experience required for such a project. If I were you,I wouldn't aim to high, a really complex engine that powers games like Mass Effect 2 might sound great but G-Police doesn't need such an advanced engine.
I would recommend Unity for this particular game, not really much else but for this game I think it will be just perfect. It's relatively simple to work with, which is just what a project like this needs.

Lastly, I'd love to be part of this project. But since I already have so much I do, I don't think I can be a constant asset to the project, at most I could serve as an advisor on the project and just help out now and then with props-modeling and some 2d stuff.

Thank you for the info. It's really refreshing to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks that G-Police needs to be re-done.

Honestly, I've never tried to mod a game before. The furthest I've ever gotten was modelling my own spaceship into Freelancer. But that ended horribly. The ship ended up being 6 times the size of a planet and crashed the game when you tried to buy it in game.
I'm certainly wanting to get into this, but not as a project leader. Sure I have plenty of ideas, but I haven't got the time to focus all of my strength into it.

The only reason I thought UE3 would be suitable was that they already have a decent set up for using flying vehicles. With a few modifications, I think it could have been used to harness the Havok gunship really well. But you're right. I tried looking at UE3 a while ago and nearly cried at the documentation that came with it. I'll read up on that Unity engine you mentioned to see what its capabilities are.

After I've finished my Havok model (1 more day, maybe 2) I'll have a harder think about how to get this all together. But yeah, if you're up for advising, you'd be more than welcome. I could certainly use the help. Hell, I'll even send you some cookies if this project takes off.

Nice progress though the tail doesn't look entirely like the original.

You know, this thread made me want to try out the game again so just for fun (and I never expected this to work) I fired up the old GP cd and installed it. It only took like a minute and suddenly I was ingame flying the Havok gunship. I was really surprised it worked but very happy as well, just a shame I haven't got a joystick anymore.

Ok, now on a serious note. If you feel you haven't got the experience to run a project like this then obviously we'll have to find someone who does. Preferably someone who knows about the game.
Do you know any forums/communities that have anything to do with G-police or Psygnosis? You might have better luck finding someone there than here. But still, this is an open thread so who knows, maybe someone interested will reply here on ModDB.

Let me know when you've decided.

Thanks. I know the tail isn't right. My plan though is to model one half of the havok, then mirror it once I'm happy with it. Once that's done, the havok will be 'full'. After that I can tweak the tail into the originals shape. Just a little trick I learned from trying to model weapons. Those can be viewed on my deviant art profile here:

I stopped using a Joystick years ago after Combat flight simulator 3 and Mechwarrior 3. But since talking about G-police, I sorely regret that decison.

Back to the serious note, I don't know any forums that relate to Psygnosis or g-police fans. However, I do frequent "The Escapist" so I'll try there. I'll also try starting up a proejct here after I've finished my havok model. Shouldn't take too long hopefully.

Hey again. Model is currently collecting dust because I got myself a copy of Syrim that I'm enjoying a lot. Also, I'm certain I'm going to follow through with this project, just need some time really.

Hello sirs! I still hope that this is active as I happen to share the same feeling regarding this and have sought to extract the models from the PS1 media for use under freespace SCP.

Drsuupid, would you care to pool resources with me? It so happens I have ideas as to how to end the story with grice and the excelsior. Not to mention I know a few people involved in the devellopment of the 2 games...

I'm assuming this is at least temporarily dead, but I would like to say though to anyone else thinking about doing this - Do It! You'd have my complete support, and I could possibly lend a hand with texturing, provided the unwraps are tidy. G-Police is one of my most favourite games of all time, I spent a lot of time playing both of them when I was very little. There was something very special about the games, especially the first one. The dark gritty atmosphere was fantastic, and when you're that young you just get so wrapped up with imagination, it's unreal.
I've long wished for someone to make a more modern version, though I am concerned firstly about the game being ruined by some company that doesn't understand it as well as the original devs and original fans of the game do, and secondly that a re-make or a third instalment might wreck the wonderful memories we all have of the originals, but if done by fans, then who knows. I know at least one very active, very very good 3D modeller who may be convinced to help.

I hope some day that people will decide to make this conversion, as the game deserves it. It should not be completely forgotten to time as it seems it might become.

Hi AJ, I was wondering about the project myself. I had been in contact with the developer but now he hasn't contacted me in a while and I was starting to wonder if he had continued or stopped myself...

I really hope this is a temporary break though and I have sent him another PM asking about the project. I sure hope this didn't die as fast as it started, I really liked the idea of a new GPolice game.

Yeah I know what you mean, it's a great idea for a mod! Just thinking about flying around in that hovering beauty makes me feel quite amped. But as you know it's hard to really go the distance with this sort of project, it's an enormous undertaking that really requires a lot of time and dedication that most people don't realise or expect. I'm sure if we put the word out enough, people will take interest in it though.

I've e-mailed broadwing and he reports that he's busy with college at the moment, so I'm going to use the time to try and gather as many screenshots and concepts from the internet and sketch up some diagrams for modellers. Having a hard time getting a decent shot of the Venom though.

I suggest you go ingame and try to get some good screens yourself. I still have the game for PC and it surprising still works on a Win7 64 bit computer.

Unfortunately I only had the games on the PSOne, I bet it's insanely hard to get a copy of it now, legally or otherwise.
