Hey guys, I want to make a 2d action platformer that has some RPG elements. What I have for aspects of the game so far:

  • 6 characters, each with their own stories (broken into chapters) and distinct classes
  • Level progression/skill tree
  • Randomly generated levels (take a chapter and the bosses in that chapter, shuffle them, and have unique levels and order for each playthrough)
  • Upgradable weapons, armor, and equipment
  • Pixel art
  • Class-specific powers and weapons
  • Difficulty selection
  • Score system (can use score to make purchases, nab upgrades, and acquire skills)
  • Power ups (wear off after certain amount of time)

My inspiration was a cross between Risk of Rain and Kingdom Hearts, with the action of Risk of Rain and the emotionally driven stories of the characters in the Kingdom Hearts series.

Sorry if this is in an improper format or if this is in the wrong section, I'm new to this. Also, I'm open to suggestions and appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

Sounds like a neat idea! The only advice I'd give (coming up to the end of finishing my first game) is to keep things simple...things get so complicated with game dev as you progress! It sounds like you're trying to do a lot of stuff.

Start designing the game but make sure you really question how valuable each aspect is to the game, and what it adds. Eg: classes add some great stuff in a lot of games, but in order to make classes matter you have to make sure players can tackle enemies/environments in a variety of different ways. That might be quite tricky with randomly generated levels - a player may end up facing a level which is too hard/easy for their class. Only a suggestion, but I'd say start with EITHER distinct classes or random gen, and see how it goes.

good luck :)
