I've been gaming a long time, and now that I'm an indie developer I find myself playing a lot of the games I used to play growing up, since these games are what made me want to become a dev in the first place.  They are full of inspiration and even mechanics that have been forgotten, or are at least oft-overlooked, in current games.  Here are a few of the games that I spent many childhood hours playing, mostly on my old 486Dx66 or NES.

King's Quest Series (Roberta Williams will always be a HUGE inspiration to me)
Warcraft I & II
Descent
Duke Nukem 3D
Mike Tyson's Punch Out (recently got a copy of this off of Amazon for my NES, and have been reminded of how often the NES freezes)
Contra
Snake Rattle & Roll
Bubble Bobble (this was the only game I could get my mother to play with me)
F-Zero
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
RC Pro AM
BattleToads

I could go on and on, but I'll end here... at least for now.  I'm curious as to what games other members find inspiration in, or at least spent long hours getting lost in.  The generation gap between myself and some of the other, younger members is also something I'm curious about... I think it's awesome to see that so many indie devs are creating games who's graphics seem inspired by the 8 & 16 bit generations.  Or maybe I'm just a crazy old guy who refuses to let go of the past.

Old school is the best. Too many games to name but the ones that inspired me to get into the games industry are :

Tomb Raider 1 - 4
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII, IX
Rayman
Spyro The Dragon
Wild 9
Abe's Oddysee
Resident Evil
Worms
James Pond II
Grim Fandango
Might & Magic VI : The Mandate Of Heaven

First PC: Dangerous Dave 2, and some early Hexen-like magical FPS, also MSPaint
First Console: Battletoads & Double Dragon, Battle City, Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Galaga, Gradius, Contra, afterwards some better looking games I don't remember the titles of.
New Wave of Crappy PCs: eh, muds and isometrics, lots of shareware, emulation and viruses. I don't remember much from those days, bad times.

First PC:

- Heroes II, always going to be one of my favourites, Black dragons, num num!
- Roller Coaster Tycoon
- Heroes III
- Diablo II
- WarCraft III
- Worms
- GTA 1 & 2

Admittedly, there are quite a few that you have mentioned that I haven't tried.

somonels:  Thank you for reminding me of Gradius!  Just ordered it off of Amazon, can't wait to play it again. The powerups you could earn in that game were sick, if memory serves me correctly.  Now if I could find a way to keep my NES running properly.

Favorites of the PC:

Total Annihilation: Kingdoms
Dune
Diablo 2
Heroes III M&M
Disciples

A really important favorite to the N64 was the Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, those changed my whole view on games, but as of today Nintendo ruined the Zelda series with their Wii.

Love to see Heroes III, love that game! and if people like Heroes III, they should try out Heroes III Wake of The Gods, some guys have made an extra expansion to the game, ioncluded things from Heroes IV, like having a hero and you can level your armies, great expansion!

There are too many games that made me want to get into the business as well but I will name some that changed my life, so to speak.

Metal Gear Solid (I have a tattoo of the FoxHound symbol on my left arm lol)
Kirby Superstar
Super Smash Bros (I used to play it for longer than 12 hours a day)
Twisted Metal Series (Started playing TM2 on my PS1 again last night as a matter of fact)
Borderlands Series (Weird how I hated the game and cussed it but kept playing. Will get a Vault symbol tattoo soon.)
Mass Effect Series (Never before have I fallen so in love with a game series as deeply as this one!)
Deus Ex Human Revolution (Never played a Deus Ex game until this one. Instantly loved it!)
Super Mario 64
Duke Nukem 3D
Dynasty Warriors Series (Yes I realize it's all strategy Hack N Slash but my God I can't stop playing them lol)
Fist of the North Star Ken's Rage 2 (My all time favorite anime turned into a game that equals the violence in it? Hell Yes!)
Resident Evil Series (I was introduced to Survival Horror at 11 years old and have repeated nightmares about zombies)
Silent Hill 1 & 2
Nightmare Creatures 1 & 2
Left 4 Dead Series (ValVe, enough said)
Half Life Series
Dead Rising 1 & 2 (Impressive, fun, and difficult zombie game)
Dead Island Series (Love it for sure)
Saints Row Series (Better than GTA in my opinion)

I have a couple, but of all the games I had, I'm gonna go with these:

Street Fighter (The whole series, obviously)
Duke Nukem 3D
Half Life
Rayman
GTA 1 to San Andreas (excluding GTA 4 since this game didn't exist when I was like 12.

Only played a few games during my childhood, they all were favorites, I would never be able to choose 1.

Jazz Jackrabbit 1 & 2
Anno 1602 A.D.
Anno 1503
Rayman: Revolution
Metal Gear Solid
Chrono Trigger
Devil May Cry 1
Devil May Cry 2
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank 2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Ratchet Gladiator
Jak & Daxter
Jak II Renegade
Jak 3
Sly Raccoon
Sly 2 Band of Thieves
Sly 3
Scaler

Well yeah that's about it.. I'm not that old (Between my 18-19's) which would be why some of you probably think some of these games aren't that 'Childhoodish'. Well whatever, they gave me some of my best memories in their times so I don't really give fucks on how old they are.

The N64 was pretty much my last childhood console so up until then some of the most memorable are:

Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3
Super Mario World 1, 2
Super Mario 64
Banjo Kazooie 1, 2
Blast Corps
F-Zero X
Perfect Dark.  Hands down still the best single player FPS on a console.
Zelda: A Link to the Past.  I complete this game about once a year now, I fucking love it. Best Zelda of all time.
Doom 1, 2
Unreal Tournament
Quake 3: Arena.  Best pure game of any genre.  Practically does what it does perfectly.
Half-Life 1
Resident Evil 1, 2

Super Mario Bros was the first game I ever played that made me look at electronic games differently and it was at my cousin's house when he just got a NES.  I had no idea what a NES was at that point and I don't really remember much else from that day.  However, the 3 or so minutes of me hypnotised by controlling Mario has been seared into my brain like a neural tattoo.  My whole life and world view literally changed in those 3 minutes of haphazardly trying to get to the exit of level 1.  Of course I couldn't finish the first level and I had to leave so I didn't get another chance to play but it's ok because I knew from then on that I loved video games.
