I'm looking to construct a team to make a mod based off Deus-Ex's setting and gameplay, and wondering if there's anyone out there interested in joining or seeing it made. This isn't a definate thing right now, I'm kinda probing around to see if I can get the support before diving in.

Here's some of the details...
-Original story, with plot twists and action similar to Deus Ex
-Completely original art
-Multiplayer component first, followed by single player component.
-Most likely based around the HL2 engine

For those of you who aren't familiar with Deus Ex, the original game took place in the near future (roughly 2050), and centers around "augmented" agents, cyborgs essentially. Without getting into the original's story too much, you play as a new generation of cyborgs working for a counter-terrorism agency, and get caught up in a tale of deception, conspiracy, and confusion...

Currently have a few skilled friends interested, capable of doing levels, animations, and the story. If we can get a programmer, then this project could start.

Comments, suggestions?

There's certainly interest in a such an idea but remember you'd have a lot to live up to. The response if you make too many mistakes from the community could be quite bad for example the Deus Ex sequal.

But Deus Ex was all about the Single Player! I mean, it received all of its critical acclaim for the (brilliant)Single Player and from what I've heard the multiplayer community was always small.

If you decide to go through with this, good luck.

Ok not quite a revival but more of an experiment in reconditioning. Maybe you might be inspired to learn of the following:

Deus-Ex is THE single player game. if you want to make a deus-ex game which stresses on multi player you've got a big problem. there is for reason no good deus-ex multiplayer as the entire gameplay and setup is just not made for multi player.

you can try though to get it done (you can't win without shooting at the net). i'm with metche_steele here: good luck... you gonna need it ;)

Dues Ex mod? You're cursed from the beggining. Ever Dues Ex mod dies after one year. Works like clockwork.

In response to a couple of the posts here, I know how hard it is to do a deus-ex mod, which is why you dont see me doing a mod announcement outright :D.

As far as art and level skill, I know we have the ability, I've been modelling and drawing for the past 2 years, and have had experience at making mods before (I've tried I think 3 times so far to make a mod), whereas the other people I've interested have equal amounts of experience in their fields.

I've learned from my experiences, or more accurately, failures, and intend to approach this project with determination and organization.

Here's some of my ideas about how to actually pull this off:
- The inventory system will not have the "blocks" system of the original DX, rather, there will be "slots" for Rifle, SMG, pistols, and medkits/ biocells.
- There will be absolutely no reference to the previous game, tieing into the fact that we'll have a completely original story, so that the game is sort of in a parallel universe.
- Weapons will be designed based off the personalities of the single-player characters.
- We won't start anything until we ABSOLUTELY have a dedicated core team.

Here's a slightly expanded version of the story (which is just my understanding):

You're character is a unique addition to a cyborg strike force, whose goal is to investigate and eliminate terrorism or spies...typical government stuff. But there's something sinister about the organization, an ulterior motive. After doing several missions you find that you're ordered to do more and more inhumane acts, such as executing an innocent protestor, etc. Eventually you decide to defy the agency you worked for, joining the very same terrorists that you were fighting. Slowly you unravel the truth about your origins, finding out that you really didnt have parents, that you were a special project to create the next generation of cyborg agents...

As for the multiplayer component, this is what I've thought:
-Gameplay will be similar to team deathmatch to start out.
-Players earn points for each kill,
-Players then spend these points on augmentations and new weapons
-Maybe throw in objectives for each team to complete?
-Eliminate and/or alter the original Augmentations to allow for more fair and fun play. (ie, change regeneration to only work while standing still)

The reason for us to start with the multiplayer component is that it is much more feasible, and if successful, could attract the larger team needed to do a single player.

So now that I've further explained myself, the question is, anyone want to help?

I'd suggest that StormÇrøw is on the right path here, if you want to do a multiplayer mod within the Deus Ex style of game coop would be the way to go, although it might be more work then straight DM it would allow you to transfer work to the ultimate goal of Singleplayer a lot easier. There's several cyberpunk mods (Since Deus Ex is described as cyberpunk by most..) for Half Life 2 and we're a close knit little mini-community within the other mod communities so maybe we could help you out a little if you got the basics of a team together. Us cyberpunk mods gotta stick together type thing.

:)

...Now that I think about it, both StormCrow and J1mmmy are right about the co-op thing, thanks for convincing me!

So far I've persuaded my roomate to learn the code, so I think this mod is about to take off. I'll be working on the game design document and the first player model today, so expect some promo art soon.

Thanks again for helping me figure out how to do this, and I really hope that I can pull it off!
